Gas Cubby v2.7 UI issues

I used v2.6 once - the version where you could not see the date spinners at all. I checked and saw v2.7 is available, so I upgraded, and can now see the date spinners when entering the date for a fill up.
The following comments are for v2.7 running on an iPhone 5 on iOS 7

Why even have date spinners? Could we not just have a calendar selector?
-- but this is probably the lowest priority of the issues
1) when entering cost and gallons, the entry row switches to white text on a grey background. It is hard to see what you are entering. The rows you are NOT ENTERING are easy to see -- Black text on a white background.
2) on the "notes" screen, there is no insert cursor visible -- either when typing or when trying to move the insert location with the magnifier. I am guessing where I will be typing.
3) and while discussing the notes page -- why is the text entry area smaller than the space available above the onscreen keyboard? There are big grey areas above and below the text entry area, so I am scrolling all the time. Let me use all the screen area!
4) and if I do have a lot of text, where are the scroll bars for the notes area?
5) why not give the option to hide the keyboard and see the whole notes (yes, this is not a bug, it is a feature request)
6) finally, why are the little check marks that indicate a row is selected (like in Tags) now green? They are harder to see. Just make them black again, so I can easily see them.

I like Gas Cubby and have been using it for years now. I want to keep liking it (or I would not take the time to write this). I put up with problems 3&4 in the old versions. To get a new version that still has these issues, and a bunch more when simply entering my first fill up after the v2.7 upgrade, is disappointing.

Can these things be fixed?

MyFocusST 10-05-2014 08:35 AM

I do realize that these UI issues are not near as important as data loss problems, but do others notice these things?

ababak 10-05-2014 12:12 PM

Yes, you are right, these issues do exist. But as there is a completely new version coming, I am no sure there is a point in fixing these interface glitches.

I notice the points MyFocusST highlighted, but I don't see them as issues. I certainly see why MyFocusST may prefer the changes he suggests, but the usability of the app has not degraded, in my opinion. I'm not trying to take away from MyFocusST's point or purpose, I just don't see them as a problem. For example, I like the change he lists as problem 1. I found it a welcomed change for a different look. But if it were to be changed, I don't think I would complain.

MyFocusST 10-19-2014 12:22 PM

I understand not wanting to spend the time fixing these things in the current version if a new version is about to be released. But when if the new version due? Is there a target date?

I'd suggest that the fact you can no longer see the cursor in the note screen IS a problem. When I go to insert something, I am guessing where the new text will appear. As for problem 1, I am glad you like the change to a different look. I understand completely the fun that comes from UI tweaks. But what if the change made the item you are entering the easy to read Black text on White background, while the other items where the new White text on Light Grey? Then you could have the new look, and the entry line would be the most visible (having the most contrast). Just a thought...

I agree with you on this point. That is certainly a problem. I overlooked it as I don't use that field.

You have a good idea with this. Again, I appreciate it as it currently is, as I don't find it difficult to read/see (and I have bad eyes). I'm not saying that it can't or shouldn't change, it's just my opinion that it doesn't HAVE to change.

RobertV 10-22-2014 10:13 AM

These suggestions are being noted.
While I cant promise they'll be tweaked on the next update, I know there will be quite a few changes for v3.0 of Gas Cubby.

Is there a target date for v3?

RobertV 10-27-2014 05:24 AM

Beta testing should be right around the corner.

I'll check on a target date however this week.

MyFocusST 12-07-2014 08:37 AM

It has now been 5 weeks that I have been entering notes without a visible cursor in the Gas Cubby notes field. This makes it impossible to reposition the cursor, since there is no cursor visible in the magnifier.

There was no plan to fix this problem that was created in v2.7, since v3 was "right around the corner". The Site Team promised to share a target date for v3 four weeks ago, but did not post this information.

Can I get a date for a fix or the target for v3?

RobertV 12-07-2014 08:09 PM

Gas Cubby 3.0 will be sent out to our Beta testers by December 15th. After reviewing the feedback and making any necessary adjustments, submitting to the app store will follow.

MyFocusST 12-26-2014 01:31 PM

I saw the recent post regarding the features and timeline for the next version of Gas Cubby (paid). It certainly seems to be a significant upgrade and I'm not surprised it is taking longer than hoped.

If I understand correctly GasTracker+ (Fuelly Beta) will be released soon. After some feedback and fixes, there will be a new version. Assuming all goes well, this will lead to the beta of Fuelly Pro (Gas Cubby paid), which will then get some fixes based on this beta feedback and then lead to the release of Gas Cubby v3.

I look forward to the new look and new features in Gas Cubby 3 (Fuelly Pro). I really do. But...

I don't expect to see GC v3 for a few months. During these month, I will continue to use the GC v2.7 note field, which has the bug which makes the cursor invisible. The bug reported in October. The bug that was not going to be fixed since a new version was right around the corner.

I really am looking forward to v3. But I am also disappointed that the bug I reported three months ago will be with me for another three months while I wait.

MyFocusST 12-26-2014 01:51 PM

After that last post I wanted to make sure I had the most recent version (I do -- 2.7.1).

What I noticed was that the app I bought a while ago -- one I picked because it was so highly rated at the time -- now gets mostly 1 & 2 star reviews. I read a few. The theme seems to be that Gas Cubby gets worse with each new version. While my issues are not as bad as some others, I can't say I disagree with the sentiment.

And now I am waiting 3 months for a new version. And the program will have a new name. Does this mean it will be a new purchase? I can't see paying again to continue this ride.

RobertV 12-26-2014 09:16 PM

Fuelly Beta has been submitted as we're waiting on Apple to approve it. It's been delayed due to the Holidays it seems.
After that, we'll release Gas Cubby v3 (but we're renaming the app). Gas Cubby (FREE) will ultimately be renamed Fuelly Basic and Gas Cubby (Paid) will be Fuelly Pro.
We will not require paid users to purchase again! We've said this since day one, and we're sticking by it.

As for the reviews- we're hoping the new version will turn those around!

My version 2.7.1 is working fine except for the cursor issue... This makes use of the notes field et.al. Very difficult.

Looking forward to the new build. It has to be close!

MyFocusST 03-07-2015 12:36 PM

Gas Cubby broken for half a year now. Honestly, do you ever plan to fix it???

And here we are. You posted in December that a new (or replacement) app will "turn around" all those 1 & 2 star reviews that gas cubby 2.7.1 so richly deserves. December turns to January and then February and now March. i started this thread last September when the most recent set of bugs was added to gas cubby. It's been half a year now. Should I ever expect bug fixes to the app I purchased?

MyFocusST 04-25-2015 07:28 AM

Just wanted to note that another month has gone by, and...
1) the bugs reported in gas cubby 2.7.1 last September remain unfixed
2) gas cubby 3.0 (or whatever it will be called) will be available at some unknown future date

Last December 15th, v3 was going into beta testers (just read back in this this thread)
Now, four months later, v3 is in Alpha testing, with Beta off somewhere in the future

I finally visited the App Store and posted the 1-star review the current product has earned. Next, I'll be looking for a replacement product that works. I am more than happy to pay for something that works.
