Hello everyone,

Thanks!
I think that people who buy diesel Passats are more interested in tracking fuel economy. Good gas mileage was what made them get that engine in the first place.

And VW's older base engine(in the US) wasn't something to get for good fuel economy. Their new one is a nice improvement.

The new Mk7 got between 60 and 78 MPG in the test cycle, not bad for a big heavy car that does 0-60 in just over 8 seconds.

I think that is in your uk galons and uk miles, and probably with the weakest engine. US MK7 is probably around 25-40mpg (US)

Yes UK MPG, miles are the same but the gallon we use is about 17% larger ;)
Not the weakest engine by a long shot, it's the 2.0 TDI, 150 BHP with Bluemotion technology, my boss has the MK6, very effecient indeed.

Diesel is here in Houston 50% more expensive, so at the moment it does not make sense

Thats a big difference. If you got 30 MPG in your gas passat, you'd have to get 45 MPG in the diesel to have the same fuel costs, which I guess is acheivable, but not worth the extra premium to buy initialy.
