Prius recall
 

Just read the 2016 and 2017 Prius are subject to a recall for faulty parking brake which could allow the car to roll away.

Not had a letter or anything - recently had a letter for a recall on our 9 year old Honda.
I usually park on the level!

I always leave mine in reverse or 1st as per the highway code, depending on which way the slope is. Can you do that in a CVT? Not sure.

I don't think so, no. Can't think of an occasion where I park on any slope that will send me rolling. I can always turn the wheels into the curb. I'm not really worried.

You are suppose to put an automatic into park, before getting out, and many here likely do that and skip using the parking brake.

I started using the parking brake regularly only once I got the 2005 Prius; its park pawl had a wider range of roll than other automatics I've driven.

In this case, people, likely new to a Toyota hybrid, might be forgetting to put the transmission in park, and possibly even forgetting to turn the car off since they don't hear an engine.

(most) Newer cars will not let you remove the key if not in park. Many also have an electric parking brake as well that engages when parked. My car automatically goes into park and applies the parking brake when I turn the engine off. Several other cars I test drove did the same.

I never had the need to use the "emergency brake" in years of driving, so full on or off with the electric brake is not a problem.

Surprised that the Prius still uses cable activated brakes.

Ha! I often get out to the bleep reminding me to press the off button....however I always do, and always press the park button then apply the handbrake (which is a pedal foot brake!)
The Prius doesn't have an ignition key, a power button turns it on and off if it detects the key fob in the car.

Many new cars don't require a key to be inserted now a days to start.
The Prius should go into park when powered off.
I think electric parking brakes are less common than keyless entry and start systems. Either way, sticking to the cable brake is an easy way to save money for the company.
