BMW Sticking with Diesels in the United States

BMW Staying with Diesels in the U.S.

Quote:

With diesel versions of the Mazda CX-5, Chevrolet Equinox, and Ford F-150 all due this year—as well as the return of the Chevrolet Cruze diesel—it would be premature to call diesels dead for the United States. Yet with VW sitting it out, Audi considering diesel only for SUVs, and Mercedes-Benz in the process of reevaluating its product plans, the market is hardly continuing where it left off. So we asked Fritz Steinparzer, BMW’s global head of diesel-engine development, how the diesel turmoil will affect BMW.

To sum up: He’s pragmatically optimistic about diesels’ future in the BMW product mix—although it’s clear that what happens in Europe over the next few years will ultimately drive the technology’s U.S. fate.

Superb engines in those Beemers, so much power and torque, and efficiency is excellent too. A good all round package.

I had a BMW 328 (petrol/gas) for 18 years, and the engine never had any issues. L6 was bullet-proof.

Just a data point on Mercedes and diesels...

I wrote to MB in late 2016 asking if the GLC SUV would be available in Canada with a diesel. They said yes, but arrival is slowing down due to emissions tests. In early January 2017, MB wrote to inform me that the GLC SUV will not be available with diesel in Canada because it didn't pass the emissions tests.

MB is trying to get their diesels into North America. Whether they succeed or not is a different story.

I've heard nothing to suggest BMW is having challenges certifying their oilers.

I'm really glad I got my 2015 Audi Q5 3.0 diesel when Audi diesels were still available in Canada, when Audi made gorgeous cars, and when the Q5 presented a compelling value proposition compared to Mercedes' and BMW's offerings. Today, Audi offers nothing I'd want, and it does not compete nearly as well since their ~10% price jump with their 2017 Q5.

Update on this:

Today, Car and Driver confirms that the model in question will be the 2018 BMW 540d, which will join diesel versions of the 3 Series, X3, and X5, all of which are currently for sale after passing more stringent EPA emissions testing for the 2017 model year.

The 540d is powered by a 3.0 liter six-cylinder turbo diesel making 316 horsepower and it’s expected to have better fuel economy than the previous generation 535d which was rated at 30-mpg EPA combined rating.
Sweet! Love that combo for the 5er.

You better start saving now, or apply for BMW finance ;)

Looks like the rest of the diesel lineup will stay.

Nice car with a powerful engine and efficient too.

The reason for all vehicles need to be diesel is not just because they get so much better in mileage and in this way they pollute less, but because only diesels can run on renewable bio-fuels.
