Sad! There is also the safety aspect. Cars with better crash safety are heavier as well. Quote:

My tiny Mirage (under 2k pounds, lighter than a smart car) passes all current crash standards and compared to an early 1990s Honda Civic is exponentially more safe in any collision.
The manufacturers are going to build what the public wants. $5 a gallon gas means they buy an economy car and leave the gas hog sitting in the driveway until they need to haul the boat or some landscaping materials. First short fill on the 81 Toyota truck was 22 MPG and one third of that mileage was hauling 3/4 ton of materials. Some of that gas was probably a year old. EPA highway was about that amount for that truck in 1981. Based on my observations and conversations, few people I know consider fuel mileage a priority. Few are even interested in riding with me to see what behavior changes could dramatically improve their mileage in any vehicle they may drive. Sadly the customer, even the stupid ones, are the drivers of the decision and the causes of the poor improvements. The potential for improvement is almost incalculable based on my research and experience the average should be DOUBLE what it is today. |
