I recently purchased a 2003 Mini Cooper basically for the gas mileage. But, today I went o the pump and filled up. The trip meter registered 404 mile range relative to the fuel in the tank.

By the time I drove 1.3 miles the range had declined by 12 miles.

I'm thinking this cannot be right. Anyone have any ideas or similar problems?

I could be wrong, but the range uses calculations from the fuel used rather than the amount in the tank. Lets say you went slightly downhill after refuelling, you may have used little to no fuel which would result in high MPG on the computer. Then the computer multiplies that figure by the fuel left to give range.

It will settle over a few miles so don't panic, but don't expect the range to be 100% accurate anyway.
