New CX-30 first fill

I filled my new car today. 318 miles driven, 8 miles range to empty, 11.83 gal., 26.9mpg, at least 95% city driving and almost all short hops less than 5 miles at a time. A little better than expected and a little better than the 26.1mpg the optimiseter told me I'd gotten. And with a rating of only 25mpg city my 26.9 looks better. I'm satisfied with that.

Not bad going for city driving. So about a 320 mile range, it must have a pretty small fuel tank.

It's supposed to be 13.5 so I guess maybe 13 gallons if you want to push it.

The combination of an almost 15 gallon fuel tank and an EPA highway rating of 40 sure appeals to this sailor.

Plus the drag (air resistance) factor seems to be improving with the newer models of my car - a 2017...........

Getting good fuel numbers - at least to me - has become more and more a priority.

What vehicle are you referring to? My CX-30 has a 13.5gal. tank and is rated 25/33/28 city/highway/combined. I've had it 7 weeks today and have 413 miles on it, 405 of them mine, so I'm averaging just over 8 miles per day so far. Probably driving a little over 9 on the days I drive as once in a while I don't drive anywhere on a given day. Imagine how good I'd have it on fuel costs if we still had mean tweets.

Why is fuel savings so important when you have dirt cheap fuel and only do low miles like that?

LDB 10-04-2021 12:53 PM

I don't worry about fuel, if that was for me. Saturday will be the biggie this month, driving up into Houston for a birthday lunch, about 60 miles round trip. I guess 3/4 or so freeway so shouldn't be more than a gallon each way I'd think. And while not a biggie at all I still liked it two years ago at half the cost or less with mean tweets.

My mpg will be going pear-shaped from now on. Instead of 80 country miles a day I am doing about 8 city miles a week. No longer worried about chasing good numbers. In my case it is pointless.

Draigflag 10-05-2021 10:31 PM

What caused such a dramatic change in your circumstances?

JockoT 10-06-2021 03:12 AM

We have now moved into my late mother-in-law's house, on the southern edge of Edinburgh. My previous journeys were travelling back and forward from Kirkcaldy to here, both while mum was alive and while we did up the house. Now there is no need.
