100 mpg

Yeah, I was going to put this in the daily FE thread, but then I deemed it threadworthy on its own. I've been scratching this itch since I realized it was possible, and after supper today I pulled out the stops and headed out to do the city loop: 101 mpg

krousdb 05-24-2006 04:12 PM

Metro, welcome to the 100 MPG club! Us triple digiters have to stick together. And what makes it even more remarkable is that you did it with non-hybrid technology.:D This is truly a feat of technical driving excellence!

kickflipjr 05-24-2006 04:19 PM

AWESOME!!

what is the next mpg goal?

tomauto 05-24-2006 04:46 PM

Tank Average

To bring up the average of the tank I suppose...What is your average miles per gallon for a tank?

JanGeo 05-24-2006 05:14 PM

100mpg

Congratulations!

Now how many MPG per lb does that come out to . . .

I hope you guys don't mind me (constantly) mentioning my 40mpg tank average in a Scion xB which is way bigger than what you all are driving.

Oh yeah and I added a photo of my honda to my avitar.

MetroMPG 05-24-2006 05:45 PM

Thanks for the cheers, guys.

Thanks, I didn't even know there was a club. So where are the snacks at? ;)

I've been waiting specifically for a 100+ round trip before posting this thread. I've already seen a bunch of 100+ one-way segments (125 is the highest one-way segment I've seen), but one-way isn't quite as demanding as getting home again with a good number.

tomauto's on the right track: to figure out how to improve my highway FE so my tank averages don't get killed by road trips. Either that or do an entire tank of city driving. Man... that would take forever at 100 MPG. That's 1000 miles.

My 3-tank average is 59.3. It should rise to low 60's with the next fill-up.

JanGeo - that's an inspired question!

I'm surprised nobody's come up with that yet. Speed performance enthusiasts love to talk power to weight. We should be comparing FE to weight. I'm going to start a thread right now...

zpiloto 05-24-2006 06:19 PM

MetroMPG thats amazing. Before long you'll be making gas in the old Blackfly. If your gas gauge goes down someones probably siphoning it out.;)

MetroMPG 05-24-2006 06:26 PM

Speaking of decimals, zpiloto (reference to the MPG to weight thread), notice that the ScanGauge drops the 10ths above 100 MPG. That kinda bites.

Too bad this wasn't a Canadian or British/Commonwealth web site. We'd be celebrating 100 mpg (Imperial) earlier and more often!

philmcneal 05-24-2006 11:18 PM

Very
Well
Done

Something to attract more users to metrompg.com ;) with those beautiful three digit numbers... now work for the tank and you know you will rule!

Compaq888 05-25-2006 01:26 AM

Nice. I used to do test loops too but making low 30mpg's with today's gas prices didn't make any sense. Of course I'm making 40mpg in the test loops but I don't want to post anything under 150 miles since I don't own a scangauge.

My theory is if you get more mixed mpg tank than your EPA hwy number then you have succeded in the MPG game.

No snacks, just the secret handshake.:D

I'm guessing it somehow involves a "1-2-5" motion of the hand. ;) At least for Honda drivers.

When are you going to add the EV scooter?

SVOboy 05-25-2006 07:44 PM

There's a whole big thread on this, so go argue there, I'm not getting in on this discussion since I'm so darn tired, :p

Wicked good numbers though!!!

And welcome.

MetroMPG 05-26-2006 05:34 AM

Edit: I moved Escape_Hybrid and Matt's responses over to the fuel economy to weight ratio thread

MetroMPG 08-27-2006 06:06 AM

133

133 mpg (US) - the results of mostly 2nd-3rd gear P&G, with some 1-2 as well. And a smaller amount of 3-4. The engine didn't even reach normal operating temps on the first leg of the trip (8+ miles).

Man Metro thats unbelieivable. It's funny looking at this thread what a difference 3 months makes. Earlier you were talking about 60 gallon tanks.:p You really smashed your previous best. What do you contribute that to?

SVOboy 08-27-2006 12:39 PM

Darin told me last night that he only touched the brakes once, to stop at his house, that's gotta have something to do with it, :p

It's pretty amazing. I guess you have the #1 spot for Best Tanks and Best Segment for now. How's this tank look?

MetroMPG 08-27-2006 01:03 PM

Thanks. This tank is "only" sitting around 80. I killed it doing the mirror & roof rack tests earlier (it was down around high 60's by the end of that nonsense). :( It'd take a heck of a lot of patient driving to beat a Basjoos' 90+ tank. Not saying it can't be done, but...

Just like earlier we'll see where your at in another 6 months. Still got the belly pan left.:D Great Job:thumbup:

schmeep 08-27-2006 03:40 PM

that is amazing, and to think i was happy just getting above 40 mpg!

im hanging my head in shame. :(

kickflipjr 08-27-2006 04:37 PM

133 on a non-hybrid. You ARE a freak.

SVOboy 08-27-2006 04:46 PM

Aww, it's not your fault, mr. yaaaris, he just likes to help.

GasSavers_maxc 08-27-2006 04:48 PM

They'll take him away.

No worries - the knowledge is totally worth the FE hit. I was completely kidding about it being "nonsense". Honest!

Silveredwings 08-27-2006 06:51 PM

Oh Man, I was just telling a bunch of people at a party yesterday how there's this guy driving a 'blackfly' who any day now is about to break the 100 mpg barrier with a non-hybrid drivetrain. They were quite impressed.

Congrats.

Silveredwings 08-27-2006 07:20 PM

BTW, did it feel like you were making an athletic achievment, like skiing a perfect GS run or something?

MetroMPG 08-28-2006 03:22 AM

Athletic? Nope!! Even the mtb bike ride that was the reason for the trip wasn't particularly athletic, just goofing around.

Sludgy 08-28-2006 05:13 AM

Geez, I was patting myself on the back for getting 17.6 mpg (mostly city) in my blue beast. I'm way jealous.

Ever seen/tried one of those motorcycle contests where the goal is to ride the course as slowly as possible without falling over? (Not trials riding, pylons in a parking lot.) Somehow it's more like that. :) More video-gamey than cardio-vasculary.

Yeah, I get it. I should have used "slo-mo curling" instead of skiing as an analogy. ;)
