It seems to be the thing in Europe and the UK that a hot hatch has to have proved its merit on the Nurburgring.

It seems like everything has to run the Nurburgring, hatch or not.

If it can make it there, it can make it anywhere. The ring is a good shakedown for pre production performance cars and soon points out any flaws or tweaks the car might need. Most pre production cars are tested on normal roads, because that's where they'll be used most, but people interested in performance need faith that thier new purchase has superior ride, brakes and handling.
