I've already self educated about EVs in preparation for ownership. The main things that matter when comparing are battery size, the bigger the number, the more range you'll have, efficiency, instead of MPG you use MPKWH, again, the bigger the number, the better your range. Then there's charging speed, there are some very powerful chargers here in Europe, so long as the battery is capable of receiving such speeds. Of course there's power too, motor power is usually KWs, but it's often converted to HP as we're all used to that. Basically the bigger the numbers with EVS, the better, in most aspects.

Motor power is also detrimental to range. The more power you have the more power you are likely to use and the less the resultant range. Just as a big V8 is less likely to get the range (miles from a gallon) as a small four-pot.

With the electric motor you don't have the penalty of not using all the power though. Drive a V8 around like you would something with a half or third its displacement, and you still get poor fuel efficiency. Don't push the electric motor, and you do get better much better fuel efficiency.
Also keep in mind motors don't have the same torque and power curves as engines. An electric motor produces all its torque at zero rpm. It drops off as the motor spins up. You might need a high power motor in an EV in order to have enough torque at higher speeds. The Prius has some pull from a stop, but it drops off at 20 to 25 MPH. |
Yes. I noticed some performance versions of certain EVs had 100% more power (mainly due to an extra motor) and yet only see a drop in range of around 5-10%.
I also like the fact that the range for an EV around town in an urban environment is drastically higher than on the highway, the exact opposite of ICE. |
