D15Z1 in a 91 CRX HF
Has anyone done it before? I got that motor lying around, Still have the ECU for it, Im gunna try using the HF intake manifold and transmission, but convert it to obd1 with a ECU jumper with the dizzy and convert the injectors
just wondering if it does help on getting higher MPG, the motor i have is fine now but it has 200k miles and the d15z1 has about 110k |
It'll help a lot, bunger on here has one in his 88 hf and matt is almost done his sedan swap.
Does the HF have EGR? If not I'd get the VX IM cuz you'll need it's egr setp. Anyway, hf transmission is perfect, sounds like you're on the right track. Depending on your location and how you want to drive you could be getting 70mpg. |

Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve
It's on the intake manifold, on the 4th runner I think? I wish I had a picture to show you, I'm pretty useless right now. Hmm, mehbe matt will chime in for me. |

If it helps, I'm in the beginning stages of my own '89 HF to D15Z1 swap and just recently picked up a rather complete engine (pan to head w/ intake manifold, intake tube/box, one mount and distributor.) My process will be slow going because of school/work, but if I get rolling fast enough I'll post up a thread to update progress w/ notes. Mak
P.S. Bunger, man that engine is clean! |
How much did you pay for the longblock, mak?
|
|
is it the thing i circled? if so ya I do got one
so would i just have to change the injectors, ecu, and dizzy? |
Yeah, that sounds right, you need to ditch the injector resistor box when you go to obd1 injectors though.
|
ya, thanks for the help, Im probably going to do this after summer, too much going on during summer to do this plus i need to save up to buy the parts I need
1 obd1 dizzy - prolly 150 4 obd1 injector clips - 5 finger discount at the junkyard 2 obd1 dizzy clips - same as above =D I got lots of obd1 injectors(Z1's and Z6's I think there the same size) , got the VX ECU, got the ECU jumper, |
I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think the Z1 injectors are 190cc, the others are 240cc.
|
I got my distributor for free, I think you can pull a z1/z6 dizzy for 20 bucks (I almost bought one for that much and got lazy and didn't).
You can rewire your obd1 dizzy plugs, that's what I did. I thought they were 190cc too, but my MID seems to disagree, :p, who knows for sure, but they're def not 240cc. |
oh ya another question....how much can a HF gas tank hold? like about 6.5 gallons??
|
Haha, it's officially 10.6, compared to mine, which is 11.9
I've been looking for someone to trade with, but to no avail. |
really? something must be wrong with mine cause I get a full tank from empty to full is about 6.5 gallons
|
Anybody else got a Z1 motor laying around and an HF transmission they want to give away??

From empty I only fill up 9 gallons, the gauges just read with a big margin since there is no gas light. Anyway, I have dibs on the first cheap z1, so get outta here, :p
|
any way to fix this or get something that can tell the exact fuel in the tank?
|
Nope, because it's not really a problem. I swapped a teg cluster in my crx and it reads exactly the same.
Two options: Use a DMM to read pure voltage and figure out how many gallons that means you have. or Install a DA Integra low fuel sensor and use that to tell you when you actually get low. The gauge is always consistent for me so I have no problem just leaving it to its business. |

You could try krousdb's digital gauge method using a multimeter. You just have to calibrate by filling your tank in small increments at first. And never fill past the maximum resistance reading. |

It won't be more accurate, it will just have a light the tells you when you get down to 1 gallon left or something.
|
oh maybe if i have time or something but filling up everytime it says empty is cool with me, it feels like the engine gets weaker once it says its empty though or is that just me
|
That's just you, :p Just let it run past empty for 75 miles like I usually do.
|
that just sorta worries me lol
|
I was worried at first. I guess it's like the first really disgusting anime you watch, you feel bad about it, and then by episode 8 she murders all the little kids in the orphanage and you're laughing.

Grrr, I'll just find one local, damn west coast. |

I'm jealous! It's taken me longer with no luck.

ebay, superhonda, craigslist, carolinahondas (my local source), here, and honda-tech if you can swim through the crap that piles there daily were my best hitters for finding an engine. Call up your local motor/import/junkyard as well and they might find something. The VX chassis is light and VTEC-ready, aka GSR/LS-VTEC/Type R friendly, so the stock Z1 is a paperweight to most people in the Honda scene. Idiots :) Don't they know gas will never see <$2 again? Mak
|
craigslist FTW!!!!
lots of VX engines are being taken out and sold for cheap on there over here in the west coast the VX perfect for any honda dragger, light wieght and already hooked up for vtec so theres alot of d15z1's being taken out over here |
I just heard about a d15z1 being taken to a metal recycler:( . The guy was like "oh I didn't know anybody would want that slow POS. sorry"
