$2,000 for used 100mpg "car"

front page of our local clasifide ad's paper today was a "FreeWay" made by HMV (high mileage vehicle), they made about 800 of them in the early 1980's in Minneaplis Minnasota, it's been about 4 years sence I last saw one for sale, but they were clamed to get 88mpg (this one is advertized as 100mpg), here is a photo of what one would look like.

so they want $2,000 for a single seated vehicle with "room for a passenger" behind the drivers seat, that has a 350cc gas engine, and I belive automatic transmition simaler to a snowmobile, I figure a better motorcycle engine and tranny and it should proform better in both mileage and speed, so what do you all think? how much is 100mpg worth?

Hell, I'd snatch it up just to put a turbodiesel in it.

If you want performance, this thing would kick *** with a Hayabusa engine in it, turbocharged...

if I remember right, they are simply a 10hp Wisconsin, or Tecumse over head valve (was an odd one) engine like you might see on a go cart, the whole thing was so insanly simple! that is why I'm thinking something like a water cooled motorcycle engine with a 5 or 6 speed tranny, or like toecutter said, a turbo diesel, these might have been avalible with a diesel, but I've never seen one of those for sale.

Bizarre!

May get great mileage, but you've got to wonder about emissions. Well, I do anyway.

Motorcycle-based cars (assuming this is classed as one) get to side-step that automotive issue.

Hey - I make exceptions for vehicles that were built before regular cars had emission controls. :)

Kohler is now making closed loop, fuel injected garden tractor engines, so they're emission-controlled. If you wanted, you could just splap a used 3-way catalyst onto one of their engines, and you'd have an EPA-certifiable 100 mpg car.

Three wheelers are a rollover waiting to happen. 150 mph three wheelers even more unstable. A Hayabusa engine in that thing would make it a death trap, if it's not already.

Where I live, traffic is too aggressive for something that vulnerable, but where you live might be different. that'd be my main criteria for deciding.
