Probably prevents fuel metering problems with rapid throttle position changes due to the long intake tract - too difficult to get the right fuel amount with all that air moving such a great distance with inertia so they just smooth out throttle action a little. The intake path must be about 4 feet long from valves to snorkle.

eggzackly. Still, even after 40000 miles, I can't get used to the timing. It's not a problem, really, it's just a little wasteful having the overrev on every shirt.
