Manufactors and Big money want you to believe

Feel free to add to the list:

1. Oil change every 3 months or 3,000 miles
2. Global warming is a myth.
3. It would be too expensive to add belly pans and deflector to cars for better FE
4. Jack rabbit starts hurt FE
5. Turn your AC to 80 instead of off when you leave the house to save energy.
6. Electric cars will never work
7. We just need to tweak our current tax system to make it work.
8. Ethonal will make us energy independent.
9. 30 MPG city EPA is good gas mileage
10. you can loss 15 pounds in two 2 weeks with _____.

[QUOTE=zpiloto]9. 30 MPG city EPA is good gas mileage/QUOTE]

I hate this one. I go to the Honda Dealership and tell them I want high gas mileage. "Well," they say, "The new accord gets 30mpg."

"I'm used to getting 50mpg," I say back. Sure, it's not exactly true, but as soon as the gremlins are worked out of my swap it will be.

They always respond with, "Are you serious?"

And by GasSavers Standards, 50mpg isn't anything to write home about... not while MetroMPG continues to defy the laws of physics with his Metro.

SOMEBODY is adding gas to the tank when he isn't looking!

11. We want you to take every tax deduction that you are entitled to.

I may or may not disagree with #4 (jackrabbit starts...). Every time I read those 'how to get better MPG' bulletins, etc. and I see that one...all it really means to me is that if you're the guy who stomps on the accelerator while taking off from every standstill (light, stop sign, etc) you're going to burn more fuel than if you hadn't. ...which is true. Unless you're reading it a different way, or I'm interpreting this the wrong way, then I don't see how it's untrue.

Eh, if you go pedal to the metal and accelerate through the entire rpm range to some high speed only to brake, then that's definitely a waste. But if you accelerate in the minimum BSFC, which depends on your engine, and is usally ~1/2-3/4 throttle from ~2-3.5k rpm up to a predetermined speed, then your FE should be better.

13. Increasing fuel economy standards would be bad for manufacturers.

Well, MetroMPG, it wouldn't hurt their bottom lines ON THE BOOKS. But the kickbacks those companies are probably getting from big oil....those would go away once they started to breach those contracts (the ones that don't exist) to make more fuel efficient cars.
