Weight of Gas
 

Has anyone tried driving with less gas in there tank because its less weight to haul around. I usaly try to have a full tank and run it all the way down because thats how i calculate my MPGS. But if if could avoid it i think it may help in weight reduction

Well, it would depend on the tank size.

Dan (krousdb) has done it, but I would say having FE feedback is more important than the weight savings.

i fill up every time, but i love the way my car hauls with a 1/4tank or less. then again my car weighs around 2300 with me in it so having 8 gallons less makes a difference.

i believe a gallon of gasoline weighs around 6lbs depending on temperature.

I could use the scangauge to see how much I have gas left. But the thing is it's inaccurate in that department. My car weighs 2500lbs with me in it.

1ml of liquid water weighs 1gram, so 1000ml (1 litre) would weigh 1000grams (1 kilogram). 1 kilogram weighs around 2.2 pounds so one litre of fuel would weigh the same. That's 8.36 pounds per gallon.

My gas tank's capacity is 38 litres so that would be an added 83.6 pounds with a full tank as opposed to an empty tank. That's 4.4% extra weight to a car like mine (actually 4.1% extra if I'm seated in the car to drive it). I'm not sure if the added weight would make much of a difference.

If you calibrate your scangauge and trust it enough you could use that to fill up. That way you could drive with only 2-5 gallons of gas. For freeway it will do almost nothing but on the streets it will make a good difference.

ive read that 100lbs of extra weight caust 1to 2% gas mileage so thats prety good. I look at it this way instead of ripping out my interior i could just put less gas in at a time and acheve pretty good weight reduction

1 gallon of water equals 8.33 lbs.

1 gallon of gasoline equals 5.8 to 6.5 lbs.

oh yeah my gas would weigh 142 lbs
