Who else has done a taller transmission swap?

Just working on my final report for my site about the Blackfly's transmission transplant, and wanted to point to other GS members who have done swaps.

I know Ben and Dax have done automatic to 5-speed conversions.

Has anyone else done a manual swap just to get taller gearing?

SVOboy 12-17-2006 01:22 PM

Frank (budomove) has. I know, I was there, :p

MetroMPG 12-17-2006 01:27 PM

OK thanks. So far I know of 3 people who've done manual-manual swaps for taller gears. (Me, Frank & a guy at teamswift.) Geometry put taller tires on his car for a similar effect.

budomove 12-17-2006 01:47 PM

Ben (SVOboy) has done mine. I know, I was there. :p

SVOboy 12-17-2006 02:16 PM

Are we making a hit list?

MetroMPG 12-17-2006 02:42 PM

Only if you want to.

(Think I'd be asking about nearby VX's and XFI's if I were making a hit list... :))

EDIT: actually, before that hit list I'd have to make a list of people with more parking space than I currently have... and a heated shop...

repete86 12-17-2006 03:09 PM

Why would you want a heated shop? Does it get cold in Canadia or something?

XFi 12-17-2006 04:06 PM

I swaped out the XFi and various other Metros for the taller gearing of the VX, does that count? :)

MetroMPG 12-17-2006 04:12 PM

You mean they're ALL gone??

XFi 12-17-2006 04:22 PM

Yes, ...I am without :(

Last two were purchased this week and picked up this morning.

I feel empty.

MetroMPG 12-17-2006 05:41 PM

Well, maybe you can console yourself by stomping on my 90-day average with the VX. :(

Hello, I swapped the 5th gear in my tranny for a taller gear. The rest of the tranny is the same. I was lucky that my car was also offered in an AWD version which had different ratios and final drive, so there's plenty of parts to swap if changes are needed. The swap consists of 5th gear (drive and driven) 5th syncro + hub, and shift fork. It cost about $250 for all new parts. I put it on the car about 4 years ago, so it's more than paid for itself in gas savings.

GasSavers_Ryland 12-17-2006 07:49 PM

I have plans to swap trannies on my '83 civic hatch dx to the hatch fe tranny that is sitting out side on the deck, it might have to wait till after new years, but it should be done in the next few weeks, of course I bought the car without a working 3rd gear, so I haven't driven it more then a few miles, and have no base mileage, altho owners of simaler civic hatch backs claim 40-47mpg.

Matt Timion 12-17-2006 09:27 PM

I did, but never was able to accurately measure the FE gain due to issues with the o2 sensor.

Were you able to quantify the results, FE wise?

So far, only the auto-to-manual guys have good data (just look at their gaslogs pre- & post-swap).

SVOboy 12-18-2006 03:56 PM

Frank has a datum or two!

MetroMPG 12-18-2006 03:57 PM

Whoops - yes, you are right. Slugworth's gaslog is good.

MetroMPG 12-18-2006 04:06 PM

I'm trying to get my transmission swap article posted to my site before the hordes come. I got a note from one of the writers at https://jalopnik.com that in the next day or so they're going to feature the 1930's aero car story.

I know people won't be coming to read about tranny swaps, but seeing as it's one of my best mods so far, I figure I should get it up there for those who decide to look around.

If it happens, this'll be the site's first taste of stardom. So I'm all tingly and stuff. Trying to tidy up. Baking cakes, etc.

(PS - both the tranny & Model T articles link back here, Matt. Actually many of my articles do.)

MetroMPG 12-18-2006 04:26 PM

Frank doesn't have a pic of his car in the garage :(

SVOboy 12-18-2006 04:33 PM

It's a white civic STD if you're interested in finding an equivalent.

MetroMPG 12-18-2006 04:48 PM

Can you confirm or deny that Frank's tranny swap happened around the time of his 7th gaslog entry - where it jumped up? The notes don't say.

Yours & DaX's are more obvious.

budomove 12-18-2006 05:04 PM

Metro and Co. 6/23 was my last pre swap tank @39.8?mpg and 6/25 was the first post swap tank @43.?mpg. I have not gone consistently slow enough to see real results. Having the no torque b1 engine and the dpfi don't help.

SVOboy 12-18-2006 05:07 PM

You need mpfi!

budomove 12-18-2006 05:11 PM

mpfi is my dream. maybe this summer while you're in japan I will do an mpfi/obd1 conversion! :p

I'll be taking orders from parts straight out the hood, y0 (the tokyo hood).

budomove 12-18-2006 05:30 PM

I'll take a z1!

edit: and a yoshi!

Hopefully we'll both notice some increased traffic then. I was going to write an article on the 1930s aero car, but I never actually got around to it.

Life just keeps getting in the way of running a fuel economy website :)

Unfortunately I don't have solid data. Before the swap my driving habits were fairly aggressive, and I averaged near the EPA combined average at 24-25mpg. After the swap I took a job 2 miles from home and stopped topping off the tank, so I didn't keep records. 2 years later I got a job 35 miles away with a long freeway commute. My driving habits also calmed down so my mpg jumped up.

I'll get on that.

GasSavers_scostanz 12-19-2006 04:24 PM

I did a DX to CX/VX tranny swap in September in my Civic Coupe. Not a scientific analysis at all, but it looks like it was worth about 2-3 mpg for me or about 6-7%. I feel it was worth it for sure but I was hoping for 5 mpg going into it. Took about 12 hrs total to complete.

MakDiesel 12-21-2006 07:20 PM

I am finally finding time to attempt my swap (Si + HF 5th ---> full HF) in the coming weeks. I'll also be changing out the clutch while I'm there and hopefully keep the high-strung hoss in one piece next semster driving 100mi/day for clinicals :( Mak
