Nissan Factory hypermiling team: 1000 km / 38 mpg in a V6 Skyline

Nissan Skyline manages 38mpg in real world driving

Quote:

The Infiniti G35 is marketed in Japan as the Nissan Skyline where it's available with other engine options besides the 3.5L V-6. One of the other options is a 2.5L version of the V-6 rated at 225hp and 194lb-ft of torque. A team of development engineers from the company recently wanted to demonstrate the fuel economy of that combination and set out on a real world drive between Nissan's Tochigi assembly plant and drove through Kyoto and to their destination at the Nissan Technical Center in Atsugi. The run took 17.5 hours and covered 636.5 miles on a single tank of gas at a rate of 38.3 mpg. Not bad for a rear wheel drive sport sedan and considerably better than I've been seeing in a similarly-sized hybrid the past few days, about which you'll hear more next week.
According to the comments beneath the article, they averaged a speed of 36.4 mph.

The VQ is notorious for guzzling gas in just about everything Nissan puts it into: Murano, Maxima, FX-35, Sentra, G35, etc. That's great news that a smaller version is being considered, although the 3.5L has a long track record of superior design and performance. I hope they carry that tradition.

It doesn't help that quite a few of them guzzle oil too.

I wonder which gallon they are calculating with, I wouldn't know which japan would use since gallons are the devil and they use liters...

lifted from the link in the original post:
"The team succeeded in covering a impressive distance of 1,024.4 kilometers with an average fuel consumption rate of 16.3 km-per-liter."
No confusion there as to which 'gallon' was used. 10 1/8 miles per liter or 38 mpg (or 45 1/2 mpg imperial). For those thinking inversely the 16.3 km/l is also 6.13 l/100km.
