Add-on sixth gear

Does anyone know how I might add on a sixth gear? I was watching Overhauling and they added a sixth gear to the car they were working on. The assembly was shown for just a moment but it looked like something that could be added inline with the driveshaft before the rear transaxle. My vehicle is a 98 Nissan frontier so rear area has plenty of room to add stuff.

Like an overdrive unit? Or an actual extra gear in the tranny?

Sounds like an overdrive unit if it's inline w/ the driveshaft... Do you have the KA24E, or the six? I bet you could do something with 4WD parts to get a cheaper equivalent gear splitter, that'd bolt up np. Just have the drive shaft shortened by the proper amount, and you may be have a splitter for not too much...

I wish I could afford adding a 6th to my tranny :( It's a little easier for me as my reverse isn't on my 6 :D

There's actually room in the trans case for a 6th gear on my Element. Uses the same 6th gear as the TSX (I think) and Civic Si. But I can't do the work myself, and it would cost a ton to get it done.

I hope you can figure out something sweet and simple for the Frontier.

Yeah, I guess it is an overdrive unit vice a 6th gear. What kind of 4wd parts are you talking about omgwtfbyobbq? I have no idea what a gear splitter is.

Maybe just taller tires? My around town mileage would suffer with the engine having to grunt harder but my highway mpg would go up with lower rpms.

It might be easier to alter the axle ratio than to go about fabricating that many parts.

Though regearing usually runs around $1k-$2k. jdham137 what kind of transfer case does your Frontier have? They might make an underdrive unit for it.

Maybe taller tires, or maybe just narrower tires, or maybe just a tire with a highway tread vs an all-terrain tread...
