Hi,all!strange 1.3 civic driver
Greetings to all!
Great site - been readin almost everything during the weekend. I have a 5th gen honda civic with 1.3 motor designated as D13B2. I'm gettin 56 mpg with no FE efforts and speeds from 55-65 mph, which seems pretty strange to me.The car is carbed by the way and I have a few other mods I've done myself. Lowest mpg I got was 60(60.359 to be precise) but that was driving with 50-55 mph due to heavy fog almost all the way+a 10 minute 100 mph burst+2,3 minute 115 mph burst:) Looking for ways to improve not only FE but emissions also and I found great info on this site. Thanks to all involved  |
Are you inside the USA?
|
I know that the Civic he is describing was never offered in the USA. I forgot the specific designation of model Civic, but he is most likely in one of the European countries.
|
Welcome to the site. Thats some pretty impressive numbers there :)

oops
Ooops,sorry guys.
I'm really from europe and the car is a EDM model. I'm from a nice, small country called Bulgaria(that's eastern europe). Pretty intersting bug that car is(at least for me). It is a carbie with O2-sensor,VSS,MAP sensor, etc. and electronic control module. I wouldn't call it a ECU,but it does calculate stuff in and out and gives you error codes and all that. Impressive nubers you say...hmm. I did see now that MPG according to EPA is not MPG coverted directly from l/100km so converted to EPA's MPG maybe not so impressive. Actual figures are average 5l/100km(thats driving with no effort, poking in my nose and driving:) ) and lowest is 4.68l/100km under the descirbed circumstances above. Began turning the engine off now on downhills, but still no result as tank is still nearly full. |
well, If I'm not mistaken, there was a 1.3L First Gen CRX HF in the US wasn't there?
|
what part of bulgaria? i had the fortune to vist the cities of PYCE and VARNA.
I really liked seeing all the old skodas(seriously i did). your gas mileage is still pretty good. yes there was a 1.3l hf here in america (83?). |
1984 was the last year that honda sold a 1.3L engine in the US (it was also the first year of the 3rd generation of civics), the base modle civic hatch back and the crx 1.3 (other option was labled as the 1.5) came with a 1.3L engine, the 2nd generation civic also came in a FE trim leavle with a 1.3L engine in the last two years of it's production, off the top of my head I don't remember the exact details of earlier stuff.

I live about 100kms(~60 miles) from PYCE in a city called Tarnovo(to pronounce it right I have to spell it like "Turnovo"). When have you been in Bulgaria? With every day now it gets harder to see the old cars(I men really old-like the skodas),but still you can see some no problem. |
Welcome. I've been thinking about a 1.3L with a D15z1 head and pistons with a piggy-backed P07 ECU...should be pretty fuel efficient.
|
Might be hard to get one though. And I don't think I would want to have one if I lived in hilly country because those only produce like 75 hp or so.

Freakin' sweet! I'd take one! I know a guy that lives in North GA (VERY hilly) and he drives an N600 - only 36 hp! I never had any problems with hills in my Beat with 64 hp. Well, that ice covered hill in Ohio took me a few tries to get up...
You could easily put an MPFI manifold on there and with a program like Uberdata tune the crap out of that thing like Coyote X. |
Dax I guess you are right. I owned a Civic CX with only 70 hp and it wasn't bad in the hills even though I sometimes had to go back to third gear and drive 50 mph. Those are still thoughts from a mind that wasn't set for FE yet. 50 mph seemed pretty slow back then :)
Wonder what kind of mpg one could get with that 1.3 engine and how interchangeable parts are; for instance pairing it with a cx/vx tranny? |

(edited:reason - line irrelevant.) It was strange for me as well, but I gues honda did well in matching engine and gearbox ratio. These are for my gearbox(same as D15B2 tranny by the way): Type MT Number S20 1st 3.250 2nd 1.900 3rd 1.250 4th 0.909 5th 0.750 Reverse 3.153 FD 4.250(4.437 from 1994) Parts are not a problem, because this is essentially a D15B2 engine it's just been destroked to 76mm almost a square engine :) (75borex76stroke) https://www.gassavers.org/attachment....1&d=1183751367 Quote:
D13B2 engine has a mechanical fuel pump that sits onto head, which does not provide nearly enough pressure to be used with EFI. So in order to do the swap right you have to get a whole fuel tank with the pump from an EFI honda plus the fuel lines to the engine bay. The other way is to use an electrical pump with enough pressure. Plus the wire hassle regarding the instalation of the new ECU. But it is far from impossible, these are just specific things to be taken into account. Thanks everyone for the warm welcome:) |
Does anyone know if these engines are obtainable in the USA? If I could score one for $100, I'd convert it to MPFI and throw it in my car with the HF tranny!
|
DaX, what kind of estimated mpg do you think one can expect of it. Would it be worth it in comparison with a VX engine?
|
McPatrick, I have no way to really give a good answer. If it were me doing it, I'd take the 1.3L engine, throw an MPFI intake manifold and distributor on it (with a stock ECU), and try mating it to my HF transmission. If I were having problems, FE issues, I'd try something like megasquirt to tune it.
One of my initial plans was to "sleeve down" my engine as small as possible. The problem I ran into was that none of the D-series sleeve manufacturers make their blanks small enough. I truly think that in the right hands, a properly tuned 1.3L Civic engine mated to an HF transmission can get great mileage. In my hands, I'd hope to average in the 50's with some 60 MPG tanks. These are the results that I would hope for based on the numbers I'm getting now in my current setup. |
