Resurfacing my crx
 
Ok so I was going to duck tape my car because of all of the rust holes. I started to but the duct tape would wrinkle and it looked like ****. I then tried some foil tape and did the top of the car and it looks pretty cool. I didnt want to do the whole car in foil so I needed something good for the doors fenders ect... after much research on what I could use and trying out different materials I have come up with a solution.

I am using cheap flexible self adhesive vinyl tiles. These are 12x12 squares that normally be used in a bathroom or such. Very easy to workwith and looks 1000 times better then the duct tape and other coverings I have tried.

I will post pictures when I am done

I've kidded guys at times about their rust holes and suggested drywall and cement. I'm sitting here grinning and thinking that when you put up your pic, I will just show them there is something you can do for cheap. Can hardly wait to see the tile you picked out.

Keep that baby running forever with that 40+ mpg. I'm proud of you.

That foil tape gunk is a *****. But I guess the adhesive tiles won't be any better. If you plan to ever re-do that car (which I guess you don't) I wouldn't put all that on there.

Just grind it out and pop rivet some steel in there. Then bondo over the rivits and paint it with house paint...moparts.com has some good How-Tos on how to make house paint look good.

I am concerned that the tiles would trap more water and make the car rust even faster.

Update...

I have one side done and most of the hood. Funny the extra weight makes the hood real solid. It shuts nice now too, doesnt seem like the flimsy piece of metal it did before.

I should have done checker board black/white because you can see the grid and I dont like that part of it.. Other wise it is looking better then the rust bucket.

Here is what it looked like before but imagine 10x worse in person.

The bottom skirt fell off because all of the clip holes rusted out. There is 4 4"inch holes in the driver door and two in the other door. This rear qtr panel is the nice one of the two and by a large margine.

If you click on my car in my online garage you can see how it looked after some duct taping

An idea for you.....Take $10, go to Autozone, and buy some of that spray-on rust converter.....Just spray it on the rust, and it chemically transforms it into actual metal. Pretty slick stuff!!

For replacing the holes.....I once patched holes in a Ranger using old license plates and JB Weld. The license plates won't rust on ya, and the JB Weld can be easier to use than rivets (although somewhat messier).

(on the other hand, I've also covered the holes with duct tape, then painted grey primer over the tape -- grey vehicle)

Rust converter turns the rust in to basicly a primer, not back in to metal, but it's still amazing stuff, and it does seem to do a good job of stoping rust!
polyurithane calk/adhsive works well for attaching metal sheeting as well, then usesing something like rubber truck bed liner to cover over it will protect it while covering over the seams.

lol it looks good now, give it a month im betting all the cornners will curl and it will trap more water causing more rust :D

I come back and look at it over and over... You know you should just start replacing parts with fiberglass. use the old screwed body panels and fiberglass on top of them as a mold, then when its built up enough pull it off grind the screwed up areas that transfered and smooth it all out. Take off the **** metal. . . I mean sheet metal part and throw it away.

$500 for the car

I've bought 2 in pretty decent condition for $500. (one has a warped head?) At any rate, You should have waited for a better deal. I know I get excited too and paid $1500 for my first 89 hatch, but damn man. It will hopefully run for as long as you can stand it.
