It's not an electric fan - it's driven by the belts. When you put an electric fan in, do you just put it behind the radiator where the existing fan is? There seems to be a pretty considerable amount of room between the radiator and the fan. How do I know which model fan is appropriate? And it's got some pretty off-roady looking tires. I should investigate others.

Also, sounds like I need to go out and get one of those ScanGuages ASAP, and I will try to get my gaslog in. Finally, I don't think "buy a V8 and run over to GS" is quite a fair characterization. More like "I have had fairly efficient small cars for many years now, but have often suffered from their lack of carrying capabilities especially since I am doing major work on the house and going to Home Depot every other day, and so I bought a large car only to discover due to my lack of intelligence on the subject how bad the gas mileage is, and now I'm trying to do the best I can." In other words, I may be dumb, but I'm not malicious. :D

Welcome to GasSavers! I may be a bit late but I wish you success in increasing the mpg of your Toyotas.

I know it's possible.

First the basics, as I think you've seen: start reading up on FE driving techniques.

And pump your tires to "max sidewall" if they're not already there. If they're more than 5 lb. under the sidewall rating, I'd go up in 4 or 5 psi steps. Let you and the tires get used to the higher pressure gradually.

Replacing the mechanical fan with electric is worthwhile (in my humble opinion) but is not a "starter project". I've done it. It's a modification project, and will have you learning about temp sensors and relays, and will likely have you drilling mount holes in a few places on the vehicle. If you're ready for all that, OK, but it's not like changing a headlight bulb or engine oil.

Are these both automatics? I always thought "4x4" meant 4 speeds, 4wd. But I'm not so sure any more. Anyway, you probably should put that in your signature so we'll know when we discuss.

Some of the more effective techniques apply differently for automatic vs. standard, especially Pulse and Glide. You may not be ready for P&G yet but you'll be reading about it pretty soon, if you haven't already.

You're going to get some of that. Don't let it bother you too much.

Exactly...people are here for a reason. If you save fuel, you save fuel -- and to me, that's positive. I don't think it's fair to discriminate against the member because of vehicle.

Making the commitment to be here should say enough. If everyone had the same opinion, it would be a boring place.

I hope the experience here is more positive than divisive.

But anyways, a feedback device and mileage tracking (aka ScanGauge and Garage entries) helps to find what works. Some (including myself) have had some luck with running a hotter thermostat, adding an engine block heater for efficient startups, and removing excessive aero drag items -- for example, the roof rack (if it's not used, it's best to get of it). There are a bunch of options -- and it can become an addictive hobby :thumbup:

Belly pan both. I'm pretty sure the new 4runners are based off the Prado so you've got plenty of free space under there, plus most of your tender parts (tranny and t-case) are fairly well tucked up between the frame rails.

The Sienna should be even easier considering that its FWD
