switch to a 99 or newer saturn sl1, add HAI+scangauge. Drive 38mph= 65mpg.

I've had a couple of Saturns, SL1 and SL2W, what changed in '99? (they're for sale cheap up here A LOT) And whats a HAI?

HAI = hot air intake. One of the tricks that commonly works on the saturns.

somewhere between 97-99 the transmission for the sohc was changed to a taller overdrive. I'm not exactly sure. Cheapybob has a 97 and I believe he has the shorter gearing.

Here is your best reference for Saturn Gear Ratios :

Yah, I don't know why the subys get so low mpg, they are small enough cars. Good to know that they respond to P&G!!

I believe the BIG problem with Subarus is weight. Most of them weigh 3000+ pounds - not exactly high fuel economy material.

Bingo! It's a porker. Small, but heavy. It's the hills that kill my FE, it's a lot to haul up to the top even if you do get to coast back down. It weighs @ 1000lbs more than I'd like.:(
