MPG suckathon

Ok so I got tired of the usual 27Mpg in the Camry 4cyl. So I

Added K/N airfilter
Reset computer
Aired up the tires to 42psi
Kept the cruise on and stayed below 68mph
Short 4min warm up this AM (28 degrees here)
Light acceleration

And TA DA

27MPG

Test drove a Prius today.....

Why'd you reset the computer? You may have lost stored information that contributed to better FE, :p

How was the prius?

MetroMPG 11-06-2007 04:35 PM

Well you'll do better in the Prius, no doubt.

But maybe you actually did *better* after your changes than you would have otherwise.

FE drops with temperature (esp below 60's/70's). If you were getting 27 when it was warm, and now you're getting 27 when it's colder, I'd suggest you've actually made a decent improvement in efficiency.

If you're doing short trips in colder temps and your mileage is holding you're doing very well.

MetroMPG 11-06-2007 05:45 PM

I was going to suggest that as well. Maybe his driveway exits onto the freeway though ;).

My 94 accord got 23-25 mpg. After being on here since may, I now average 35mpg. My tires were at 42psi last week, probably a bit lower now. I rarely go over 60, even on a 65mph freeway. I drive ~46 miles on my round trip commute every day. I drive into a fairly large city into rush hour stop and go traffic. Yea, I could do better, but this is without being too awfully annoying. I am sure you can get into the 30s, but you will have to work at it a bit. Hang out and read a bit here, these guys will teach you alot! The K&N wont buy you much unless your foot is really in it. Then your FE will suck. I too have a K&N style generic intake, and a huge fart-can style muffler. I like the louder sound, but thats just me.

Not a big fan of K&N unless it is for a race car...not a great filtering media-
I would look into an Amsoil EA Air Filter

Good stuff...maybe drop to just 65 or so

Fuel Injected ... warm up not a big deal...are you running synthetic oils?

Good Stuff

Got to let your computer relearn your new driving techniques

Probably running 34-36psi before...go to 46 or so

my old camry did the same thing.. it was a 93 auto 4 cylinder. always got 23 mpg, no matter what i did. aired up tires, air filter, weight reduction, etc

Too many variables at once...

I'd put the stock filter back on. I'm not sure if there was an advantage to resetting the ECU with all of the other items -- what SVO was suggesting.

Idling has proven to be a terrible way to warm up. Just drive slowly...

Colder weather hits FE pretty hard.

Give it a couple of tanks, and get a feedback device. The fill-up method may have been flawed.

I'd like to have the option of buying a Prius when things don't go well :p

As if you didn't have enough recommendations and suggestions. I will add that the slow acceleration could be hurting too. Its important in an automatic car to get the convertor locked up as quickly and cheaply as possible. Once locked you should work very hard to keep it locked. FE driving is very much a learned habit. You will see gradual improvement over time. Once learned its hard to forget.
