1992 CX to VX conversion?
 

Tried to do a search on this but could not find anything... have been having trouble finding a VX here in Norcal that was not grossly overpriced or severely modified/damaged. I did pick up a decent 1992 CX with an engine that could use some freshening. What would it take to put a VX engine in instead? Is this a hard conversion? I know the transmission is the same. Any help? :confused:

Things that I know of but may not be all that you need: 1992 Honda Service Manual, and Electrical Trouble Shooting Manual (absolute must haves and can be found over the internet. Get the books only, no manuals on DVD. They often have missing pages., 1992 to 1995 VX engine (D15Z1) with intake and all applicable components (air tube, fuel rails, sensors, injectors, etc.), EGR lift control box D15Z1 engine only (most difficult to find), engine wiring harness for VTEC-E, alter your existing under-dash harness to accept 4 wire or, 5 wire LAF sensor or replace under-dash harness with VX harness, VXs have tachometers. Does your CX? If not, replace cluster (can use Civic LX cluster with manual transmission). Get a 4 wire or, 5 wire LAF sensor (much more expensive), replace ECU with 37820-P07-L02 CA 4-wire or, 37820-P07-L00 CA 5 wire (harder to find).

Hard conversion? What do you know, what experience have you had with wiring, multitesters, and replacing wires in connectors without damaging them?

I just completed the HF to VX swap listed here and the CX to VX would be something I could do in my sleep. It just depends on your experience and perspective.

You might advertise in the Wanted on the Forums page. I've had good luck getting contacts from people when I have needed something and I am pretty new here, too.

Okay, I have been reading up on this... the way I understand it the CX and VX are very similar except for the actual motor. The tranmission is the same and I believe the dash harness will work too, its just that my CX cluster has a stupid upshift light instead of an actual tach. So if I swap out a VX cluster it should work. I also believe the 4-5 wire O2 sensor should work with my CX dash wiring as well.... which means I should only need a VX motor with engine wiring and ECU to install in.

Can anyone give me any guidance on if this is correct? Also, if you know of a good source for complete motors in the Norcal area? ;)

P.S. Decent condition VX Civics are soo damn hard to find in my area I figure building up the CX I have now is a better option... :eek:

Should be plug and play, except for the o2 sensor....

unless you get a CA version ECU. The california VX had a four wire o2 sensor. the 49-state VX had a five wire, but also had better fuel economy.

Other than that, it's a pretty straight forward swap. Should be able to do it over a weekend if you'd have no experience before.

Matt, just answered your IM... Looks like the CX to VX swap is not hard. For running the 5-wire O2 its just a matter of running the extra wire to the ECU correct?

You'll have to hook up the VTEC also. Or get a harness from a Vtec engine. But it will bolt right in.
