My point was that they are improving the 2 strokes as of late. The Merc 2 Stroke Engine burns cleaner than a comparable 4 Stroke. In Asia, they can retrofit a Direct Injection system that makes them burn cleaner than the 4 Stroke Engine Replacement.

The are developing a "second stream" air flow system that used a second stream of fresh air to push the air/fuel to the top of the cylinder so as not to lose it out of the exhaust ports. There is room for 2 Stroke/4 Stroke/Diesel/Rotaries and even 6 Stroke engines in our future. Different applications can be met by different packages.

My scooter is a 2 stroke with oil injection as well, and according to my manual the exhaust has a catolitic converter in it as well, and the exhaust is nice and clean, non of that 2 stroke smell.
I would love to have a 4 stroke, like the Sachs MadAss, but for now I'm fine with a 2 stroke with a two speed automatic, it dual centrifugal clutches, running gears in synthetic tranny fluid, then a chain drive.

Tier II for Auto actually are 4.2 g/m CO and .31g/m HC

2 Stroke(2006+) are at worst 16g/m CO and 1.38g/m HC

So the 100 Times More is a bit of an exageration...more like 4x at worst with at least 2x the FE. The gap is closing and there is technology (especially Direct Injection of Fuel) that will make them even cleaner.
