That's a good one...had to look it up. Very appropriate!

ihatemybike 05-06-2008 11:38 AM

Dang, fill the tank of his pickup three times in a week! Where is he driving that he's burning that much gas and can't claim it as a business expense or get paid for mileage? Luckily, I can get away with filling Green once a week.

I was recently given a rusty '93 Eagle Summit Wagon (Mits Expo LRV) that needs the trans rebuilt. My bro and I are going to attempt the rebuild it ourselves in his garage and I may use it as my commute to work car after we're done. Been eying '96-'99 Ford Escort Wagons on CL lately too though.

A lot of these used SUVs will end up in Venezuela where gas still costs 12 cent per gallon.

dkjones96 05-06-2008 12:57 PM

I was noticing the used car lots around here have the overwhelming majority of their lots filled with SUVs and trucks. Maybe it's time to talk price on a good suburban down to almost nothing.

roadsterbum 05-06-2008 01:01 PM

At the end of the article:

"I don't need this much space," McHugh said of his SUV. "It just seems ridiculous."

FINALLY, people are starting to realize what has been an obvious truth for such a long time.

only when you post!

civic94 05-06-2008 01:58 PM

its a step in the right direction. i hate empty and big suv's and pickups on the road, and the person in it is in a suit going to his office job. it just endangers the smaller cars around them, making smaller cars add safety features and weight

you'll be amazed at how much crap i hauled in my coupe, since the back seats folds down. if its too big, i just put it on the roof and strap it down (did it with beds, sofa's, fridge, table, even 500 pounds of rice for a restaurant)

he's not the only one. I just get the image from a while back, a suburban or tahoe pulled up behind me. I almost didn't care except out of the corner of my eye, I didn't notice a driver. I watched a few seconds and two eyes peeked over the wheel as the little mexican girl tipped her head up to see. WTF.

SL8Brick 05-06-2008 05:28 PM

Nice article. I personally know of 3 people that are trading in their trucks/SUVs for more FE vehicles. From what I'm told, they're taking a hit on trade-in value.

One of my co-worker's traded-in his relatively new Chevy Tahoe for an older Audi A4 1.8t w/ a manual trans. He took a beating on that deal.

GasSavers_JoeBob 05-07-2008 10:43 AM

So this guy is looking for something that gets more than 18 mpg? Geez, my Eldorado does better than that!

theholycow 05-07-2008 10:56 AM

Heh, I'm almost up to 18mpg in my full size v8 pickup. The updated version of my truck has displacement on demand, I could easily beat 20, probably 22 with it...

Three6Eight 05-07-2008 12:04 PM

Look at the truck in the first pic, notice the bed? Looks mint!

99.9864% of pick up owners around here have beds that never have been used ever.

I use mine though :)

Hateful 05-07-2008 12:21 PM

When they come down to about $100 I'll buy one to use as a utility building in the back yard.

I'm hovering right around 17-18 MPG combined with my Yukon Denali. I'm not a hypermiller by any means I just keep it under 65 on the highway and don't accelerate too fast. I'm actually looking to get a bigger guzzler now and these lower prices mean I will get a better deal (though that will be partially leveled out by the hit I will take on the Yukon). I need a larger car with higher towing capacity so I am looking at the Excursion Diesel.

My solution to high gas prices has been buying a CRX HF and keeping an SUV for when I need it.

GasSavers_ALS 05-07-2008 02:01 PM

I was up the local Sam's Club today and out front one of the Dodge Dealers had a Ram pick up parked. Save up to $13,000 was on the front windshield.
I think that tells you how bad truck sales are.

brucepick 05-07-2008 06:18 PM

Funny thing about raw capitalism.
It bites you hard in the backside if you make bad decisions.

Lots of dealers and maybe some US automakers could go under due to thinking they could survive by selling gas hogs to the marketplace.

Instead, they should have been real leaders and told people they should buy true gas sippers. Should have built them too. Silly Detroit boys.

Snax 05-07-2008 06:47 PM

But their profit margins are scant on compact cars vs. several thousand on full size trucks and SUVs. And if you can only sell one car to one person, which one would you push as the business owner?

Expect to see some serious price cuts in the new market very soon!

Why? They thrived! Or, do you mean that they could go under if they don't modify their strategy from here on in?

Telling the consumer what to buy is a terrible idea from any point of view other than that of a busybody or a company with a monopoly. Building true gas sippers is fine, but building too many would have been a death sentence for any manufacturer who did; they never would have survived until now when it's much more feasible. They built what the market would buy.

Except in a monopolistic market, the buyers are in control.
