Top secret VW super-mileage vehicle!!! spy shots

I spotted this beast on hwy 1 (Calif) today. It had a claim of "80mpg bio diesel VW" on it. I apologize for the poor quality images from my spy camera/cell phone. :p

hahahah classic VW Rabbit pickup...

Claim could be true, or at least close. I owned a '72 diesel Rabbit that got 50mpg on the hwy. That was back in the mid 70's when VW had dirty diesel engines and all that was available at the pumps was the high sulpher stuff.

GasSavers_RoadWarrior 05-07-2008 03:51 PM

That was clever, since they didn't start production of the Golf until '74, intro'd it in the US in '75 and didn't call it the Rabbit until '78, which is when the diesel engines started to come along...

Looks like RoadWarrior's right...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Rabbit says they were introduced in '74 and the Diesel wasn't out until '76, and doesn't specify if those were the years they were introduced in the US.

The one pictured above appears to have some custom aero bodywork, I think.

Where on Highway 1 were these pics taken? It reminds me of San Luis Obispo, but it could be anywhere on the central coast.
