Hey guys my name is Ron and I have a 1985 Accord Hatchback 1.8 ES2 motor and a 5 speed, my question is if I wanted to change my carb (leaking, someone used a hammer to "get it going") what head could I use to replace my CVCC head, also what manifold would allow a simple 2bbl or even 1 bbl if I wanted to do a MPG test mule.

My final question is besides the obvious vacuum lines (brake, dist, and AC) can I just give the car a vacuum-dectomy and rip out the other vacuum lines?

I appreciate the info in advance I tried to search the archives but have had no good luck with the search engine and there is even less info online for the ES2 motor WIKI doesnt even mention that this motor is a CVCC style.

I'd like to do a vacuumectomy on my 1980 Buick, too. I don't know exactly how much is necessary and what can be removed, but I'm pretty sure I can remove much of the emissions stuff without affecting economy (and the car is exempt from emissions testing in my state).

I've asked and I didn't get a lot of answers, though one answer did point out that EGR is involved in spark timing and if you remove it you'll have to adjust that.

The Buick may be exempt from regular emissions testing, but...is there any stipulation that the emission control equipment be maintained? Here in beautiful California, any car manufactured before 1975 is exempt from the biennial smog ritual, BUT all emissions equipment must be maintained, and one can still be cited if said equipment is removed or otherwise circumvented...

That's a good question, and I think there's some federal regulations about it too. However, I think in reality that stuff is not enforced on old cars like that. Hang out on any classic muscle car forum and everybody removes all that stuff, but nobody reports ever getting fined or otherwise even checked for it.

OTOH, check modern sports car forums, and people are getting whacked for even the tiniest invisible component changes that don't affect emissions (and even if they pass the emissions test). It's common for people to report some part of their intake that lost a CARB sticker, and they get pulled over for speeding with no indication of modifications, the cop asks to look under their hood, and BAM!...a big fine.

I still wouldn't recommend you yank the stuff from your Caddy, though; I think it's far worse in CA than most other places.
