1971 to 1979: A blue 1960 Chevrolet Corvair 4-door Sedan...140 cu in boxer 6 with two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission...slower than anything on the road except a 1969 Austin America. But a nice flat floor, bench seat and really small gearshift lever sticking out of the dashboard...great car for dates! 18-23 mpg (depending on how worn the engine was after I rebuilt it)
1974-1975: 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu 4-door sedan with a 283 v8 and two speed Powerglide. Sort of Champagne colored metallic, really pitted windshield. Bought it from a West Covina Cop...found a little baggie w/vegetation under the front seat! A/C cold enough to hang meat in the car! 9-13 mpg. 1977-78: 1965 Plymouth Fury III station wagon, repainted taxicab yellow. 383 2bbl V8, three speed auto. Best handling big car in the world (IMHO), fair A/C. Kinda reminiscent of the Chrysler from B-52's "Love Shack" in appearance and how it was used. When I got it, it had 1/8" gaps in the top piston rings and lots and lots of sludge. But it ran great and passed smog. Got 30 miles to the quart of oil. Six quarts to Santa Barbara (from Glendora)! Did much better after rings and bearings. Another good car for dates (that big bench seat again). 10-18 mpg. 1978-1981: 1972 Mazda RX-2. Ran like a bat out of hell. Crappy mileage for such a little car. 12-16 mpg. 1980-1985: 1965 Mercury Comet Caliente two-door. Like a contemporary Mustang, but with square corners. Bought it off a friend for $100 and a bottle of Blue Nun. Drove it for five years. Traded it for a Honda 550/4, car quit a couple weeks later. Probably just ran out of gas...gas gauge didn't work. 1983-1988: 1965 Chevrolet Van. Old plumber's truck. Cleaned out the backness, carpeted and paneled. Stiff winds on I-10 west of Whitewater would hold me to about 50mph. 15 mpg. 1984-1988: 1962 Rambler American. Needed engine rebuilt, car ran fine after that. Had plans of painting car, re-doing interior and reselling for a profit, wife-to-be moved in and decided we should keep the car. Drove it until it broke. 18-20 mpg. 1985-1988: 1967 Chevrolet Impala 4-door sedan. 396 4bbl, three speed auto. Wife-to-be's car. Cops always gave us "the eye" in that car. 8-14 mpg. 1987-1989: 1973 Mazda RX-3 Wagon...bought for $25, nice little drive to vegas car. About 15 mpg. 1988-1990: 1975 Datsun B-210 2-door. Had the usual dents that all these cars have. First good mileage car I had. Wife and I were driving to Vegas one time...I was dozing in passenger seat...woke up to see speedometer needle on 100! Drove until timing chain broke, I've forgotten why I didn't just fix it...27-32 mpg. 1988-1995: 1979 Chevrolet Chevette 4-door. Got about 30 mpg until the car was rear-ended...after that, only about 20 mpg. Car drove straight, coasted fine, stuck like glue to the road on Angeles Crest/Angeles Forest Highways, (probably due to good tires/shocks) never found out why the mileage sucked so bad...One of the few cars I ever sold while it was still running... 1990-1994: 1966 VW Bug. Originally purchased by my father in 1976...car ran very poorly, previous owner was told that it needed a $400 valve job. Dad bought the car for $100, on the assumption, worst case, that if he had to take it to the dealer and get the $400 valve job, he'd still have a good deal. About halfway home, the car started running great...turned out the automatic choke was all gummed up. A few squirts of Gumout fixed it right up. Fast forward to 1990...Dad had been dead for a couple years, and Mom wanted the car outta the driveway. My brother had been driving it and threw a rod. I picked up another "1300" engine for it...actually it was a 36 hp engine with a big bore kit. Made it work, drove it off and on for a couple years, then sold it. About 25 mpg. 1990-2004: 1976 Chevrolet LUV pickup...just a little pickup truck. Got stolen once, I got it back with a much newer battery! Blew head gaskets right and left, even with another engine...18 mpg. 1992-2004: 1977 Volvo 245 Wagon...Nice and shiny, bad seats, wife's car. 18 mpg. 1995-date: 1973 Mazda RX-2...My parents bought this car new. It only has about 60k miles on it now, but it's on its third engine. Also it has been sitting outdoors since the late '70s, so it's pretty disheveled looking, but it is straight as an arrow. Needs fuel pump, carb rebuilt. May need other stuff. Might make someone a cool 4-door race car...went like a raped ape when new. Got to punish a few of my friends at stoplights. Was a lot of fun to make backfire under overpasses and in tunnels! 11-15 mpg. 1995-2005: 1985 Lincoln Continental...bought w/134k miles, wore out at 400k or thereabouts. Had my first mpg computer. 17-24 mpg. 1999-2004: Three different Mopar minivans...nice design, but they kept breaking (maybe 200k+ miles had something to do with that?) About 18 mpg 2003-date: 1984 Lincoln Town Car. Now has busted transmission, gotta get it outta the driveway. 17-19 mpg. 2004-date: 1983 Cadillac Eldorado...see "Oklahoma Rust Bucket" 2007-date: 1991 Geo Metro...see "Former Barbershop Sign" There's probably been a few others, don't remember them all now... |

For being such a Camaro guy, you should know '97 is the 30th Anniversary, and if your car is an anniversary edition, it would've been white w/ orange stripes, no exceptions. I've owned: 1984 Camaro 5.0L A4 (13 mpg city, 16mpg highway) 1991 Plymouth Laser 1.8L M5 (28 mpg mixed) 1994 Camaro Z28 5.7L A4 (21 mpg mixed) 1994 Camaro Z28 5.7L M6 (still own) (17 mpg mixed... car is modded) 1996 Saturn SL2 1.9L A4 (still own) (my first "hypermiler project") 1997 Subaru Legacy GT 2.5L A4 (19 mpg mixed) 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 4.7L A4 (17 mpg mixed) |
in the past 20 + years I've owned:
82 Oldesmobile Delta Station Wagon 91 Ford Tempo 89 Toyota Corolla SR5 91 Toyota Previa (wife's) 00 Honda Civic - still own it 01 Toyota Sienna (wife's) - still own it |

1) i made the mistake of posting while tired 2) i HATE camaros(all but one was/is the wife's) 3) wife's dream car would be the 2002, which would be 35 years since the first we could be ashamed as well as her present car, 30 year anniversary mystic teal(i believe) w/ white stripes, was left unrecognized as legit . so it seems your "no exceptions" is a bit off. look at our garage(NV)! 30 year decals, stripes, and interior are included. alas, it's just a V6. edit: called chevy about our paint color...it seems it was special order making it more rare than the white car w/ orange stripes. ours' looks sooooo much better than the white BTW. |
