electric fan conversion
 

I have a 94 nissan 4x4 pickup witha 4 cyl. this truck came with a 160 degree thermostat, and always runs cool. I removed the fan and added an electric fan. in stop and go traffic in temperatures over 90 degrees, I have to turn the fan on every so often, otherwise, I never use it.I have thought about installing a 180 degree thermostat, but I rather enjoy not having to worry about overheating.

You're worried about overheating with a 180? Most cars come with 195's from the factory. Even my 1981 Buick came with a 195 from the factory. In the 18+ years I've owned it the car has never even gotten close to overheating. You'll probably get better FE with a warmer thermostat.

EDIT: Your heater will work much better in the winter if you up the thermostat too. I had a 180 in Rusty for a while when he had some overheating problems, and the heater did not work as well.

you can also get thermal switches that will cut on the fan for you at set temps.

I would run a 195 so that your engine stays nice and warm and you get the best mileage out of it.

I almost never use the efan in my S10 4 cyl. I gotta be sitting for a while idling before it even gets to 190 and I've never gone over 200 before a light turned green BTW I have a 180f t-stat, factory is 195

the only thermostat available for my truck is the stock 160 and an optional 180. I will probably switch to the 180 . if you have ever had a vehicle with a heating problem, you can become gun shy about increasing the running temp.

The electric fan stopped working on my Saturn about 18 months ago.

I never fixed it.

I do mostly highway driving. As long as I'm moving at least 25 MPH, the engine will stay cool, even with the A/C running. If I'm stuck in traffic I turn on the heat (happened about 3 times in 18 months) - not pleasant, but I just haven't had time to fix the fan.

p.s. I'm not suggesting you remove your fan, I'm just illustrating how little a fan is really needed. (I cannot run A/C when I'm parked or stuck in traffic, obviously)
