Pull back the carpet (I think there is one plastic clip that holds that area of it down..though not 100% sure), and remove any clip that holds the carpet.

Agreed. He sounds like he doesn't know what he's doing at all. You should always ask a customer if it's alright to cut the damn wires before installing something that shouldn't have the wires cut...
