Over the years there have been a number of cars that came with free wheel mechanisms, to allow coasting. Rover, Lea Francis and SAAB, to name but 3.

It is not illegal, here in the UK, to coast....
It is not illegal, here in the UK, to coast. There is even a question in the theory test about coasting. It is not advised, but there is a difference between "not advised" and "illegal".
