Changed motor oil with 5.5 quarts Mobil 1 full synthetic 10W-30, 0.5 quarts Marvel Mystery oil, and Mobil 1 M1-102 oil filter. Cleaned engine bay with brake cleaner and engine degreaser then hosed down with water (battery disconnected and removed). Noticed lots of gunk between alternator and engine block. Washed exterior with wash/wax liquid. Applied Rain-X glass treatment to all windows and mirrors. New Bosch windshield wipers were installed.

Aug 16 2017

Installed new upstream O2 sensor gasket (Toyota part # 89466-20020). One of the bolts holding the sensor to the flange twisted off, but it appears that just having one side tightened down is enough. Disconnected battery and pressed brake pedal three times to reset computer, removed EFI fuses to reset fuel trim levels. Check engine light went away after it started and driving and noise are back to normal.

Aug 5 2017

After a highway trip there was a rattling noise coming from the underside. I could not point out specifically where the noise was coming from. The noise would get louder based on engine speed, but also when traveling over speed bumps with the engine idling. This indicated that the problem was most likely not internal to the engine, but instead something coming loose externally. After another long highway trip, the noise had changed instead to just a much louder exhaust. When I looked for the location of the issue this time, I saw that the upstream O2 sensor had come completely loose from the flange on the side of the exhaust pipe. The nuts that normally tighten the sensor to a gasket and bolts must have rusted and completely fallen off. The check engine light also came on and the exhaust is sometimes backfiring when engine braking.

Changed motor oil with 5.5 quarts Mobil 1 full synthetic 10W-30, 0.5 quarts Marvel Mystery oil, and Mobil 1 M1-102 oil filter. Ran Sea Foam treatment liquid through vacuum line with engine running. Cleaned engine bay with brake cleaner and engine degreaser then hosed down with water (battery disconnected and removed). Noticed lots of gunk between alternator and engine block. Washed exterior with wash/wax liquid. Added window washer fluid. Filled tires to 36 psi.

Dec 14 2015

Rear end has started to make a howling noise that is more noticeable (louder) as vehicle speed increases. Sounds more like a "whirring" noise when vehicle is moving >10 mph. Not related to engine revs or exhaust. Noise has gotten worse over time (since a few months ago). When coming to a stop or rolling at very slow speeds (<1 mph) the rear end "clunks" lightly.

Jun 14 2015

Changed oil with Mobil 1 synthetic 10W-30. Replaced old oil filter with Mobil 1 M1-102. Substituted about half a quart of new oil with Marvel Mystery Oil. Put duct tape and grease over the hole where antenna cable came through and refitted the interior trim pieces. Front fender lining on passenger side needs to be replaced (Toyota part #53875-04030) and was probably contributing to rain water entering cabin through antenna cable hole. Replaced stripped screw holding in MAF sensor and also cleaned sensor with CRC specifically formulated MAF sensor cleaner. Sprayed CRC throttle body cleaner into throttle body intake. Cleaned off battery and corroded contacts. Flushed coolant system and refilled with ~60/40 mix of distilled water and Prestone regular antifreeze. Coolant was previously dark brown. Replaced air filter with Purolator Classic A24645. Engine ground wire broke temporarily and car would not turn on, even for auxillary power. Once I reattached it to the negative battery terminal, it powered on right away. Temperature reading is a little lower than before with new coolant. Reset computer for fuel trim recalibration after MAF sensor cleaning.

Feb 15 2015

Went to Merchant's Auto on Battleground Ave. so they could finish what I originally asked for at previous mechanic. They disposed of the bent wheel and put the tire on the full-size spare wheel, performed a steering and wheel alignment, and installed new front brake pads and a new front brake caliper on passenger side. Car drives perfectly straight and steering wheel is very close to 12 o'clock. Need to purchase another spare (whether full-size or not).

Feb 6 2015

Truck was towed by AAA to Triad Equipment Service because truck was not driveable with ball joint failure. I asked the mechanic to look at oil leaking on engine seals and the diff fluid continiuing to drip. Driver side lower ball joint was replaced. Differential pinion seal was replaced. Front crankshaft seal was replaced. Differential appears to not be leaking anymore. I won't be able to see additional engine oil leakage until the engine bay is scoured with degreaser/brake cleaner and water pressure. They did not allign the steering wheel after the ball joint replacement

Differential is still leaking fluid, albeit very slowly. I must have not put the correct seal on or just not installed it perfectly flush.

Apr 20 2014

After a camping road trip, on the way back home (2.5 hour drive) I started to smell oil. Upon inspection, it was the differential pinion seal leaking.

Mar 7 2013

Replaced old 1995(!) Denso spark plug wires with a new set of NGK wires (part #TX72). Noticed a *slight* increase of performance as far as acceleration and throttle response, but could be placebo. Check engine light came on but was most likely caused by a misfire or timing error from the new wires. Unplugged battery and reset computer and it went off. Water leak on passenger side floor is due to missing fender liner and hole where antenna cable goes through. Had to peel back carpet and some interior trim to find this out. A screw holding the MAF sensor is stripped and needs to be replaced.

Feb 23 2013

Changed oil with Valvoline NextGen high mileage 10W-30. Does not have "energy conserving" on bottom of API label. Switched old oil filter with Purolator PureONE part #PL10241. Changed out old Bosch Platinum spark plugs with NGK standard copper part #BKR5ES. Didn't forget to use anti-seize grease. Replaced distributor cap with BWD part #C797P and rotor with BWD part #D704. Poured about half a bottle of Seafoam through vacuum lines while engine was running. Cleaned out PCV valve with throttle body cleaner. Also attached spare tire onto bottom of truck bed.

Feb 17 2013

Went to Merchant's Tire & Auto Center on Battleground Ave. because passenger side front tire had TOO much wear. Mechanic said excessive toe in was causing the tire wear in question. He also mentioned that the shock absorbers were failing. Replaced all four tires with P195/75R14 Sigma Shadows (part #6K-40). They each have a 40,000 mile limited warranty. Also had shocks replaced with Monroe Sensa-Trac/OESpectrum shocks (front part #37111, rear part #37112). They performed a steering alignment as well. Free steering alignment from Merchant's within 6,000 miles. Ride is much more comfortable and steering is perfect now. Total for parts and labor was $728.60.

Nov 20 2012

Outer tie rod end on driver side was replaced. Toe-in was also adjusted. Four wheel thrust alignment was done as well as checks and adjustments on suspension parts, steering parts, tire pressure, tire condition, ride height, caster angle, camber angle. Steering wheel was centered. Both front wheel bearings were repacked and had seals replaced. Labor was done by Mike's Tire & Service Center on West Market St. in Greensboro. All four tires will be replaced soon due to dry rotting and wear from previously poor steering alignment. Total for parts and labor was $407.72.

Nov 19 2012

Disconnected battery, pulled EFI relay, and pressed brake pedal three times to reset ECU (but specifically the fuel trim hoping to compensate for cold weather). Also filled front tires to 37 psi and rear tires to 34 psi. Noticed front passenger side tire is worn and showing steel belt in some places along outer edge.

Nov 12 2012

Battery died a few days prior. Charged to full overnight and it cranked the engine once before dying again later that day. It was an old Autocraft Silver. Had this battery since the truck was bought in 2010. Replaced with cheap "Econocraft" 26R-EC from AutoZone, purchased for $59.99 with trade-in. Rated for 405 CCA and has a 90-day warranty. Might return to replace with a nice Optima.

Nov 9 2012

Steering alignment has gotten worse. While driving at highway speed it pulls to the left hard. Steering wheel is also cocked more than before now. Paint is also starting to wear heavily, especially on the hood. Planning to either have repainted professionally or just do a DIY spray job myself soon.
