Over the past six tanks of gas I've driven 1,630.4 miles and have consumed 120.505 gallons of 87 octane fuel. These have been 90% city miles, and most of those city miles were driven in less than optimal fuel-saving conditions: windows down, very heavy stop and go, and my longest route was 12 miles with many shorter 2-3 mile trips for errands around town. Before switching to a city-only commute, I was averaging 15.2 MPG and driving a daily roundtrip of about 39 miles. Now, over the past six fuel-ups, on my city-only commute I have averaged 13.5 MPG for a daily roundtrip of about 24 miles. I have suffered an 11.1% reduction in MPG, however I have realized a 38.4% reduction in miles driven.

Aug 13 2009

Reduced daily commute mileage from ~39 miles round-trip to ~24 miles by driving on the streets to and from work instead of the freeway. By switching to city driving for my work commute my drive-time has increased, as has the number of stop and starts (i.e. traffic signals). At this point, I'm getting 15.2 MPG - it'll be interesting to see how this commute change will effect my MPG.

Average highway speed: 70 MPH. City driving: frequent acceleration. It *feels* like the truck runs better on Chevron gas (this tank was Shell brand).
