I have a '92 VX that I bought a few month ago for $1595. Since then I have spent a few hundred dollars on getting the maintenance up to speed, but since buying it, it has given me 50+ mpg constantly. This weekend I will try to finally do it and drive 55 mph on a trip to Michigan (located close to Dayton, Ohio) and see what it does for me.
If money allows I want to attend to the rust that's forming on the rear wheel wells and have the whole car painted (and no $500 job either). The way it's driving for me and the mpg it's getting justifies getting a decent VX to a good condition again I think. Even if I were to end up having spent $3000 total, just look at what a new car costs and the mpg you get with that. I am starting to like my VX better and better and hope to drive with it for quite a while (unless a mint VX comes by one day and then I might get that :) ).
So how many VX's do we count so far?

McPatrick, you might want to touch base with your insurance company about how "they" value your vehicle. If you invest $3000 and have an excellent value machine for that and then you're involved in an accident, you may be heartbroken to find out that even though damages might be only $1500, that your insurance company might want to do a write-off and give you an appraised value that is even less. Been there, done that... they win.
