Punctured one tire on some old pliers left in the road. These tires (Fuzion HRi) have over 45k miles on them and they are terrible tires anyways, so ordered a set of Hankook Ventus V12 evo K110s in stock size. Replaced the bad tire with a snow tire for now.

Feb 27 2013

Third brake light burned out. Tested off the car but could not get it to work. It being an LED light, cost was $101.50 for a replacement from the dealership. Ordered a new serpentine belt as well ($60.94). I purchased the Mitsuboshi belt, not the Bando.

Dec 3 2012

Installed snow tires on a spare set of stock alloys 120 miles into this tank. Toyo Observe Garit KX in stock 215/45/17 size. I purchased these secondhand off another local tC owner who used them for one winter. Initial impressions are similar wet traction to the current Hankook all-seasons, but MUCH quieter. Snow trip next week. $250 for tires, $200 for a mint set of OEM wheels, and $50 for mounting/balancing.

The scangauge has proved much less useful than I thought. The one useful thing I have learned is that this car does not go into fuel cutoff on deceleration. In fact, idling in neutral uses less fuel than coasting in gear. Not at all intuitive, but good to know.

Jan 22 2012

Installed scangauge II, we'll see if we can find any more mileage through monitoring driving habits.

Dealership flushed and bled the brake system trying to solve an odd braking problem. Their determination is that very wet weather caused an intermittent poor braking issue.

Jan 1 2012

Changed coolant and PS fluid. Toyota oem super long life (pink). Service interval is 100k but I thought it smart to change it now (65k). Extremely easy to bleed. Coolant looked a little orange in the rad cap, but when drained I couldn't tell it from the new fluid. PS fluid looked a little faded but not bad. No leaks found. Also added half can of seafoam to gas. Cost: $60 total

Clutch fluid change, tomorrow will do brakes and coolant. Brake/ clutch fluid (combined reservoir for both) looked very clear.

Dec 11 2010

Added Mobil 1 0w-20 full synthetic motor oil and new filter about halfway through tank. We have been using the dealer's free 5w-30 oil since we bought the car; hoping to see a bit better mileage during these winter months.

Oct 5 2010

I just found out that Toyota changed the recommended oil from 5w-30 to 0w-20 in 2008. I had not consulted my owner's manual and have been using 5w-30 since that's what is available at the dealer (we paid for free lifetime oil changes). I think I'm going to put a jug of synthetic 0w-20 in it at the next oil change, run it for 10k miles and see if we can eek out a bit more mileage.

Aug 17 2010

We've only had one tank below 30mpg since I switched to lower-viscosity synthetic trans fluid in late spring. The weather has been largely warmer though since then. Our average is much higher this summer than it was last summer. But average mileage has been increasing ever since we got the car too. We'll see if mileage drops off to the usual 26-29mpg this winter, or if we can keep this 30mpg average up.

Jul 21 2010

Oil analysis said this motor (like most Toyotas) is very easy on the oil. I had 3500 miles on the sample and they said to try 5,100 next time. No fuel or water or warning signs at all. I probably could have told you that, but it was interesting to see the results. Will test again in another 20k miles or so.

Mar 28 2009

Kalifornia road trip #2: Two passengers from Eugene, OR to Fresno, CA, to San Luis Obispo, CA, to Los Angeles, CA and back. 2234 total miles at average 29.5 miles per gallon Total cost: $166.38, 7.4 cents per mile average Oil was changed at the dealer (free 10k service) the week before we left, but dealer overfilled about halfway past the "full" mark on the dipstick. >:| Tire pressure was maintained at 38-40 cold psi throughout the trip. Mileage is fairly disappointing, though we did just about hit 32mpg on a 400 mile tank, which is 18% better than highway EPA estimate. Compared to taking the same trip in August, mileage was about the same (the first trip started before 2000 miles on the odo, still within the break-in period) though gas cost about half as much. Odo is now just below 13,000 miles.
