Car is setting P0380 Glow Plug Circuit 1 Malfunction code. Attempted to replace glowplugs - #1 snapped off inside cylinder head, #2 is stuck, #3 and #4 replaced no problem. Took to mechanic. Mechanic successfully removed #2 glowplug, but tried and was unable to remove glowplug #1 without removing cylinder head. Head removed, glowplug extracted, and head reinstalled. New timing belt, water pump, EGR valve, and many other top end seals and gaskets replaced (including intake, exhaust manifold and turbo-to-downpipe gaskets). Chunk of carbon (possibly from intake manifold) become stuck in #1 intake valve causing valve to make contact with #1 piston on first start. Head removed again and #1 intake valve replaced due to contact with piston. No piston or rod damage. Head reinstalled. Intake manifold cleaned. Because engine was apart, oil has been changed again despite just being changed 2000km ago. Injector pump timing reset to 63. Car runs much better now. Code has been reset. Next oil service due at 476,000km. Next timing belt due at 580,000km. Long story short - if you ever replace glowplugs on your own car, USE ANTI-SEIZE and DON'T OVER TORQUE!! This should've been a 5 minute job. On the plus side, the internals of the engine looked fantastic despite the high mileage of this car!
