Post theholycow's sig/link meta-thread (Warning: Contains random and miscellaneous stuff)

My sig is full...so I might as well move some of it into a thread and just put in a single link to the thread, right? From now on, I'll add things here and send people here to see them rather than trying to squeeze them into my sig.

Open-source ECU tuning for Subaru/Mitsubishi/some Mazda/presumably some Chrysler:

Fuel injector cleaning using DIY chemicals or sending them by mail to be professionally cleaned and tested:

Another post about professional cleaning:

See also a BITOG thread where it seems like Gumout Regane and Redline Sl 1 are the best store-bought cleaners and BG 44k is the best you can get:

More DIY injector cleaning ideas (remove injector, pressurize with aerosol can of cleaner, fuel pump, or vacuum pump)

Why MPG (or any Distance Per Volume) can be a difficult measurement to use instead of l/100km (or any Volume Per Distance):

Why using higher octane rated gas isn't going to help FE or power:

Also, general sources for Haynes/Chiltons style manuals:It looks like Bentley ( http://www.bentleypublishers.com ) doesn't offer online content, but most of the other repair manual companies (Chilton's, Helm, Alldata) offer online access for a fee.

Collections of calculators mainly for off-road truck configurations but may be useful for other purposes:

Another tire size calculator somewhat like the miata.net one in my sig
http://www.roversd1.nl/sd1web/wheelcalc.html
This one has more detail about gear ratios and requires you to enter more data, but calculates more driveline data.

Time to payoff for buying a more expensive, more efficient vehicle vs. a cheaper, less efficient vehicle:

There's diagrams in those links that show the airflow around trucks, which may help car drivers better understand drafting.

Other:
Search junkyards (sorry, "auto salvage yards" (oops, "used auto parts dealers" (I apologize for my political incorrectness, "auto recyclers"))) nationwide for the part you need:

Air filters tested -- paper vs. K&N vs. other brands, and so on:

The generally accepted authority for questions, data, and myth-busting about motor oil:
http://bobistheoilguy.com
(Keep in mind that it is still a forum and has plenty of people who subscribe to all the myths without an ounce of skepticism.)

Weight: Does it really make that much of a difference? Well, not for bicyclists:
http://www.gassavers.org/showpost.ph...1&postcount=39

More on weight reduction, with actual measured results:
http://www.gassavers.org/showthread.php?t=8361
When it's all said and done, some cars can have a measurable FE difference of ~1% MPG per 1% weight change -- so, to get a 10% change in MPG, one would add/remove 230 pounds on a 2300 pound Civic. Other cars may not respond to weight loss at all, such as a 2.5% MPG change resulting from a whopping 19 percent weight change.

Stuff that's still in my sig:
Hypermiling/FE "sleepers" -- cars that get better FE than expected or respond particularly well to hypermiling techniques:
http://www.gassavers.org/showthread.php?t=7449

Good threads about drafting:
http://gassavers.org/showthread.php?t=7219
http://www.gassavers.org/showthread....4033#post94033
- In summary: A draft at highway speeds extends to three times the length of the vehicle, resulting in a 2 to 3 second following distance behind standard sized tractor-trailers -- that's not close, probably further than you were going to be anyway.

My DIY fuel rate meter thread:
http://www.gassavers.org/showthread.php?t=7714
- Also contains links to many other DIY fuel rate meter / MPG meter / electronic info threads

Tire pressure myths, facts, observations, effects:
http://gassavers.org/showthread.php?t=7712
In summary: You would probably benefit from additional tire pressure.

The effect of tire width on rolling resistance:
http://gassavers.org/showthread.php?t=7713

Low rolling resistance tires, which models are good:
http://gassavers.org/showthread.php?p=110803

Tire size calculator -- tells you the difference in diameter for any two sizes, and calculates speedometer/odometer error (and therefore your fudge factor for figuring your FE):
http://miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

You're probably not actually lugging your engine when you use too high of a gear, just making it growl a little:

Lowest gas prices from websites approved by the EPA (instead of the junk spam we get advertising such sites):
