I've been talking about fwd, and FWD Tempos don't have planetary gears in their rear axles.

I'm not quite sure of the Tempo's exact layout tho' for that funky 2speed final drive. But if for top...

Wish I was fast at photoediting... I was looking for a schematic of the dual final drive transaxles but haven't found one... why not go direct to the tall final drive only?

Sure looks possible to me... but at the expense of another gearset for the primary shaft to drive all the lower gears OR use the tall final drive only as the direct drive power path (Tempos have 2...

I wouldn't try to swap the gears out themselves for that; I'd find a scrapyard axle with the desired ratio and stick the whole thing in. That's relatively simple, cheap, and easy.

Interesting. I knew that gearsets got more efficient as they approached 1:1 ratio, but I hadn't considered strength.

Even so, I can't get rid of the notion of a 1:1 direct top "gear" as being the...

I'm guessing that even low "primary" ratios struggle against a "too tall" final drive... that and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee though. I don't know why transmissions are the way they are...
