Don't fool yourself into thinking baking soda is safe. As soon as power is applied it starts changing to NaOH. The pH goes from 7 to 10 in a very short time.

I think you have pretty much nailed it. If I may throw 2 cents more in, I think we are hoping to make the cylinder pressure peak when the crank throw is near or a little before the 90 degree point...
