Ok, I can imagine that heat is conducted out of the exhaust gas through the turbo, so it's cooler and denser on the output side, which could conceivably result in higher pressure on the input side...

Ah, but the turbo doesn't work on exhaust heat, it works on exhaust velocity. There have been discussions of scavenging exhaust heat too; to do so, you would change the exhaust gas's density,...
