Re: Running a WAI through the wringer

You're welcome, Vic. I kept my WAI, because I think it has to help the engine warm up faster in the Winter. Even with the WAI, my engine doesn't warm up in the Winter until I've traveled ~four...

Re: Running a WAI through the wringer

Sorry, I didn't see Koji Kabuto's question until just now. I didn't record load values, since they vary with uphill and downhill grades, and loads are different for different engines.

Re: Running a WAI through the wringer

Did some AB testing of my WAI/CAI today. I'd checked the WAI side pretty thoroughly, but not the CAI side. My setup allows my air intake access to cool air in front of the front fender, so I did...

Not much new to report, but I thought you all might get a kick out of seeing my lower grill blocks....

Re: Running a WAI through the wringer

Wednesday's high temps worried me, too, but the coolant temp alarm light only went on about 2 miles from home, and only stayed on about 1/4 mile. When the temperature alarm kicked on, I was...

Re: Running a WAI through the wringer

Temperatures topped 100 degrees locally for the past 3 days. I took the xB out on Wednesday, and the WAI IAT was in the 168 degree range, but my power went down the tubes, and the coolant...

Re: Running a WAI through the wringer

Any fuel economy improvements would come from using a smaller engine for normal cruising. If your normal engine is a 1.8 liter engine producing 130 hp and getting 40 mpg at 60 mph, you probably only...

Re: Running a WAI through the wringer

Thanks. Yes, I can monitor ignition timing. It varies when I'm DWLing. If I try to keep it in the high 30s, my mpg will be the best - often in the 50+ mpg range and higher. But I lose speed most...

Re: Running a WAI through the wringer

Summing it up:
Insulated WAI results from 8/19/10
B1 (WAI) test 31 mph CC = IAT 127?, ambient 66?, 54.0 mpg
A1 (control) test 31 mph CC = IAT 94?, ambient 66?, 54.1 mpg
B2 (WAI) test 31 mph CC =...

Re: Running a WAI through the wringer

Well, I did my ABA testing with the insulated WAI today. Ambient air temp was 66 degrees when I left the house. 9.7 miles of P&G later, I arrived at my testing area, with the xB warmed up. Water...

Re: Running a WAI through the wringer

I drove the SE-R down to San Diego for the weekend, or I'd have gone out and run the tests already. I'll probably run them midday, so there'll be minimum temperature change between tests.

It...

Re: Running a WAI through the wringer

Remember this project? I finally insulated my WAI, and will do some ABA testing in about a week. Following photo shows the wrapped WAI....

I've been out of town on a road trip the past 2 weeks, driving my SE-R (averaged ~39 mpg over 2500 miles). I'll wrap my WAI and tape it soon. Then I'll be ready for another round of tests.

Yes,...

That R-30 is really thick when it uncompresses. I had a difficult time wrapping my WAI with it. I ended up cutting three pieces of it, each about 2' long, and wrapping them around my WAI before I...

I bought the R-30 insulation. The thinner stuff was R-13, and wasn't narrower at all. Both were 15" wide, to fit between 16" and 18" stud centers. There was only a $0.40 difference in price...

Okay, a 40' roll of R-15 insulation ~1' wide is $9, and a huge roll of R-30 ~18" wide is $10. The thinner stuff is easier to work with, and I can just double the layers.

P&G is my normal non-test driving style, because I get ~10 mpg better FE with P&G.

My bread and butter WAI tests were done with steady state cruise control. After I completed my ABA cruise...

Stay tuned. I'll get an old blanket and insulate the WAI aluminum tube before I write off WAIs. I'm not going to hunt around for replacement plastic tubing, though. Unless I see better results,...

To allay all concerns:

My Scangauge is set to hybrid. You have to do that to P&G with EOC. It still loses miles during P&G. That doesn't affect the test accuracy, anyway, since I'm comparing...

Good grief! It just dawned on me that I misspelled the title of this thread. It should refer to running it through the wringer, as in a wringer washing machine. Can a moderator fix this for me?

AFAIK, it's not registering distance when EOCing. Long term miles are taken from the ECU, so those figures remain accurate. Current trip distances are incorrect, but tank and day miles are accurate.
