Consider using a 100cc to 250cc 4 stroke single cylinder dirt bike as the back half of your car. That way you've got the rear suspension, engine, transmission, brake, etc.. Also the dirt bike engines...

A single cylinder diesel engine coupled to a transmission such as those used on some Royal Enfield motorcycles. If it has to be a gas engine it should be low RPM long stroke small bore.
