Re: Read my spark plug...

I bet you thought this thread was dead!

Today I finally installed the new BWD Select rotor/cap/wires and Bosch Platinum plugs that I've had waiting. When I went to take off the #2 wire it nearly...

Re: Read my spark plug...

I'm not sure. When it's not severe it's hard to hear, doubly so with the windows open. The same weather that makes me likely to work on stuff also means I need the windows open...

Re: Read my spark plug...

To compensate for my forgetfulness I decided to keep a log of thoughts and post when there's a significant chunk. I just wrote up my first entry and it was plenty for posting.

Driveability suffers...

Re: Read my spark plug...

Well I've finally done some stuff. I didn't want to keep posting small worthless updates, so I'll post a few small worthless updates in one post. :D (Drat...the trouble with that is I've forgotten...

Re: Read my spark plug...

I haven't done anything with the stuff in question since the last post...but I have done some reading.

Oops. I have a positive backpressure EGR, which means it won't hold vacuum unless it has...

Re: Read my spark plug...

LOL, don't worry about your forgetfulness, I'm way worse. I can't even always remember my own stuff let alone somebody else's. I appreciate your patience.

Yes, that assessment of the bucking...

Re: Read my spark plug...

Sorry, I forgot to mention again (I know it gets confusing in here) that my EGR currently has manifold vacuum. (Edit: But I see what you're saying; manifold vacuum EGR is recent, while the high idle...

Re: Read my spark plug...

I'm pretty sure that no matter where I hook up the vacuum gauge, when it's bucking the gauge jumps all over the place, from vacuum into pressure, etc...except when it's hooked up to that check valve...

Re: Read my spark plug...

So, I managed to do a few things from my to-do list, now that the rain has stopped long enough for the dry spell to coincide with my availability.

This is just an update, I still have a long list...

Re: Read my spark plug...

I'm not too worried about the proper spec. I'd prefer to just get it as low as I'm comfortable with.

So the weather is nice but I'm still busy. I spent much of yesterday at the junkyard. As...

Re: Read my spark plug...

I still haven't worked on it (same reasons - mainly weather and time). However, I'm halfway through my second tank of 93 octane fuel. On 93 my spark knock certainly seems reduced.

I've also...

Re: Read my spark plug...

I'm pretty sure that ported vacuum never goes higher than manifold, right?

My spark knock only comes when my vacuum advance is behind a check valve, causing advance even when there shouldn't be...

Re: Read my spark plug...

Ok, I'm more sure of what the thingy is now. It's very similar to a DS-VMV but is actually a SAVM. See my detailed post:

Re: Read my spark plug...

Not thorough enough! You and others provided plenty of other things I need to check, and eventually I will.

Re: Read my spark plug...

The intake backfire is what I originally thought was going on. A couple times I think I've made it happen in the yard with the air cleaner off and seen flames or smoke come up through the carburetor....

Re: Read my spark plug...

A couple random observations:
- When the skipping/bucking is most severe, the vacuum gauge can jump into pressure as high as 5psi
- Gauge jumps as high as 5psi pressure sometimes when dieseling...
