Re: Read my spark plug...

My personal opinion is I never mess with timing lights. I just advance it till it pings, and back it off little.

Re: Read my spark plug...

Maybe older points ignitions would be different, but I'm pretty sure the electronic (1975 & up) were the same.

Re: Read my spark plug...

The coil was the same on all of the cars. As a matter of fact, in many cases the same distributor was used on V6 & V8 motors, the only difference was the cap.

Re: Read my spark plug...

If this is the case, Take the #1 cylinder to TDC. Then remove the distributor cap. The rotor should be pointing to the #1 cylinder. If that wire is going elsewhere, then you're miswired.

Re: Read my spark plug...

I always did plugs with a cold engine just so I didn't burn myself ;)

Re: Read my spark plug...

I don't see the point of water injection when using ethanol blended fuels. The alcohol in the fuel absorbs humidity from the air, and that water goes through the fuel system and turns to steam in...

Re: Read my spark plug...

That's very close to the stock setup, except there's a thermal vacuum switch to keep the intake air at a steady temperature.

Re: Read my spark plug...

Changing the base timing as is simple as loosening the distributor clamp, and rotating the distributor. I never set my timing with a timing light, I just adjust it by feel. I advance it till it...

Re: Read my spark plug...

HC, sounds like you either need to adjust your timing now, or switch to a higher octane.

Re: Read my spark plug...

I'm not sure what that yellow thing is then. I haven't had my 1980 Pontiac in nearly 20 years, and the 81 Buick is electronic advance. I could take a look at Rusty next time I'm down at Dad's, but...

Here's a good cure for purchasing Autolite:

From the makers of the infamous "Orange Can Of Death" comes Autolite spark plugs! If they think they can cut corners and use hot melt glue to...

Re: Read my spark plug...

I have seen where it was miswired, but the timing was far enough off that it was only noticeable only at certain RPM's. IMHO Niehoff/BWD ignition parts were just as good, if not better than OEM. ...

Re: Read my spark plug...

Autolite copper plugs are crap. I was never able to get more than about 10,000-15,000 miles of satisfactory service out of them. At least replace them with AC Delco copper plugs. You can usually...

Re: Read my spark plug...

HC, are those normal AC Delco copper core plugs? If so you may want to switch to the AC Delco Platinums. You can easily get 100,000 trouble free miles out of the platinum plugs.

Re: Read my spark plug...

Looks pretty normal to me. You might be running a hare lean, but not too bad. No oil burning. Clean, check gap, and reinstall.
