I think part of it is that although engine technology has vastly improved in the past 20 years, your average shade-tree mechanic doing maintenance on their car is doing procedures that were optimal...

I've only encountered one instance of an engine not lasting, and that is in my 81 Buick. The previous owner (my sister) neglected to check the oil in her cars until the oil pressure light came on. ...

I do the same. I drain the bottles overnight as well to make sure I get every drop out before I throw them out.

That seems odd, but I never fully understood what and why they will/won't take stuff. In my town they will take plastic oil bottles, but they won't take empty pizza boxes. Go figure...

Why not throw the used plastic oil jugs in the recycle bin? That's what I do. They have the recycle symbol on the bottom.
