It appears that the clutch pedal spring was indeed needed because without it the clutch is rattling a little bit when stopped and not engaged or when driving at very low speeds. When it rattles, if I push up on the clutch pedal with the back of my foot the rattling goes away. Replaced the spring, but I couldn't find the correct one at Pep-Boys so even though the rattle has diminished it is still there a little.

While I was washing the truck I noticed the bracket holding the exhaust at the very back had broken and the tailpipe was a little loose. So I took it to Midas where they welded a new bracket in place.

Sep 25 2017

While driving to Ikea the clutch pedal return spring broke, but I noticed the pedal was returning fully even without the spring, so I think I will not replace it.

Felt a little hiccup today right after I started the truck for the first time of the day, but it didn't feel like a misfire rather a carb miss as a result of the engine being cold now that the days are cooler and also I did not have the choke pulled. In fact it didn't misfire at all once warmed up even under load uphill.

I was able to remove the wiper arm on the passenger side without damaging the paint. The pin holding the spring giving it tension to make it stick to the windshield is broken and I should really get a new arm, however I was able to temporarily fix it and now it works better but the spring is not able to give it all the needed tension, but it's good enough for now.

No misfires in the last few days. :D

Replaced wiper blades. In the process of doing so, I must've snapped the spring in the passenger side wiper arm because the blade is not flush with the windshield and doesn't wipe correctly. I will have to remove the arm and try to re-hook the spring in the arm to cause it to squeeze the blade on the windshield.

Aug 22 2017

Picked up the truck from Saddleback Automotive after they installed a new Pertronix unit. Truck runs much better with much more power, so the old unit must've been bad for a while. I guess vibrations from the old engine might have killed it. Also, when I found a little oil under it a few weeks back it might have prevented a good ground of the module. No more noticeable misfires, but I did feel a subtle miss up the hill on Pacific Park and Heather Ridge. I looked under the hood and one of the spark plug boots was not all the way fully covering the ceramic, so I pushed it all the way in. Probably when they removed the spark plug to check for spark they didn't fit it all the way back in. I drove the same route again and did not feel the miss again. It was either that or the fact that that I still have not gone through even half a tank of gas since I put the water remover and perhaps there is a little bit of water left. The fuel gauge just moved from Full today. I will monitor and reassess.

Driving to the gym today the truck was still missing a little, then after a little while it started sputtering and missing pretty bad. Eventually on La Paz close to MacIntyre it finally died. I was able to pull right into a parking lot where it died on the driveway. Three guys from Hot Off the Grille came out and helped me push it out of the way. Tried to restart it, but it wouldn't. Called AAA and had it towed to Saddleback Automotive. Mike called me a little later and told me the electronic ignition module likely went bad because they were not able to get any spark out it. They ordered a new module which should come in tomorrow.

Aug 19 2017

After 2 days of driving with no problems, I felt a little sputter on light acceleration on Pacific Park right before turning right on Heather Ridge. As I said before if indeed it is water in the tank it will take a little while for the issue to resolve, the fuel tank gauge hasn't even moved from full since the last fill up.

Aug 17 2017

On the assumption that the misfire/hesitation is caused by water in the tank I went to Pep-Boys and bought a bottle of ISO-HEET additive. Added it to the tank and topped it off with additional gas to keep the tank full. Truck did not miss after that, but I would expect that the issue would be lingering a little more until most of the gas is used up (if indeed water in the tank is the problem). No charge for the additive, I used a $10 Pep-Boys Reward card.

Picked up the truck from Saddleback Automotive. They replaced the tie rod end dust boot and adjusted the carburetor. They said they could not see a leak coming from the base of the carburetor. When I asked them about the misfire they indicated they didn't notice any when they test drove it and perhaps the carburetor adjustment fixed that issue. I went to pick up the truck and while it runs and idles very well, I can still feel the misfire. I brought it back to the shop and Mike took a drive with me to see if he could feel the misfire, but it didn't happen the whole time we test drove it. He told me to keep an eye on it and try to establish a pattern on when it happens (hot/cold, full/empty tank, stop and go traffic, etc.). On the way driving home the truck missed again. While thinking about this, I seem to remember that when the truck had this same problem a couple of years back it might have been an issue of water condensation in the tank. I have been running the tank between 1/4 and 1/2 full for a long time and the recent humid days might have created a situation where this water in the tank which could certainly cause the truck to miss. If I remember well I think I ended up buying a fuel additive to remove the water and that might have been the fix. I can't remember the details so I will need to try track it back, but perhaps this is not an ignition miss, rather a fuel hesitation situation. At least the tie rod boot is replaced which is important otherwise the joint could have become damaged over time. The popping from the exhaust has decreased a little. As soon as I got home I had to drop the idle back down as it was quite high and could've caused run-on issues. This shop always seems to set the idle a little too high.

Truck is still misfiring. It's become a little more regular now and no longer random. Dropped truck off at Saddleback Automotive for repair as well as to fix the tie rod dust boot and leak from under the carburetor.

Aug 13 2017

Pulled all the spark plugs and inspected them. Number 5 & 6 seemed pretty fouled up, also some carbon deposits around the threads and at the base of the porcelain. This could possibly the cause of a misfire. Aside from the carbon deposits the plugs are all dry which is good. The rest of the plugs still had deposits but not as much as the other two. I swapped the plugs with the Autolite plugs that I took out when I put in the NGKs. I put new dielectric grease on all the wire boots and reinstalled everything. This time I was successful in covering the ceramic of all plugs with the boot so it should help insulating from arcing.

Carefully inspected the distributor cap, cleaned up the spark plug contacts with sandpaper. I can't seem to find any cracks in the shell, replaced it on the truck.

Aug 11 2017

It is still misfiring. Not as much as last night so the dielectric grease must've helped. I also noticed that there is just a hint of gas still seeping from the base of the carburetor maybe the gasket is defective. Called Saddleback Automotive II and will probably bring the truck in on Monday to address these issues and the tie rod end dust boot.

Put dielectric grease inside all 6 wire boots and around the ceramic of the plugs. Was able to push the boots to cover the entire plug with the exception of cylinder 2 & 6.

Aug 10 2017

While driving home after visiting Lorraine last night I noticed the misfire got much more noticeable like a stumble. Feels like an ignition miss, probably because when I put the new plug wires in I didn't use dielectric grease.

Misfire seems to be getting worse, tried to pull plug wires to check them and some of the wires came off the connector. Bought new set of wires as well as a new gas cap, perhaps that will fix the backfire through the carburetor issue when starting up.

Aug 8 2017

After parking at Stater Brothers for a short period truck backfired through the carburetor on start-up.

Aug 6 2017

With engine completely cool I tightened the two bolts holding the carburetor on the intake manifold. They were a little loose. I also tightened a loose bolt on the intake manifold itself. Perhaps this is the reason for the backfire on startup.

Aug 5 2017

After parking at store in the afternoon I noticed a gas smell. Looked under the hood and noticed some gas seeping through the base of the carburetor.

While crawling under the truck I noticed the Tie Rod End Dust Boot is tearing and will need to be replaced. Will probably bring it to the shop.

Took apart the distributor to check the weights and springs which looked good with free play, not sticking. I found a small amount of oil between the Pertronix place and the distributor base plate, so cleaned it up and sanded down to make better contact. Maybe the cause for the backfire at startup and misfire?

Jul 17 2017

Truck still producing random backfire when starting. Posted question online and someone said it could be a defective ignition coil. I replaced the coil just a few years back, but car got painted in the interim and the heat of the paint booth might have damaged it. Installed Pertronix Flamethrower, the oil coil did show some sign of corrosion on the outer shell where the bracket wrapped around it.
