Arrow We are experimenting with enabling user reputation.

We are experimenting with enabling user reputation. You may have noticed the green boxes under people's user names in the forums, and the blue check mark. It is our hope that reputation can be a tool for new members to gauge the advice that they get, based on feedback that user receives from their peers.

To add or remove from a member's reputation, click on the blue check mark in the lower left of their post. A menu will popup with the reputation controls.

Basic reputation rules:

Everyone is starting with +10 rep.

You start with one point of rep altering power.

For every year you've been a member you get one point of rep altering power.

For every 1,000 posts, you get one point of rep altering power.

For every 100 reputation points, you get one point of rep altering power.

Your post count must be greater than zero to be able to modify another user's reputation.

New Members & Greenhorns will be unable to issue negative reputation.

You may only modify 10 user's reputations/day and you cannot go back to the same user until you have given reputation to 20 different users.

If your reputation falls below zero, you will be unable to issue reputation.

If you have any questions, comments, complaints, etc, please post them here in this thread.

Thanks,

The Admin & Mod team.

Re: We are experimenting with enabling user reputation.

so what exactly are the levels? what does it mean? is everyone on a "distinguished road"? maybe that is a good starting point.

I guess this is to more easily point out the ones that just stirr up mess.

being that I have been here for 3+ years and have almost 2k posts, does that mean that I can damage someones rep bad just by disapproving of them?

I know, a lot of questions but I guess it comes with change.

Re: We are experimenting with enabling user reputation.

the levels are as follows:
User can only hope to improve -50
User has a little shameless behaviour in the past -10
User is an unknown quantity at this point 0
User is on a distinguished road 10
User will become famous soon enough 50
User has a spectacular aura about 150
User is a jewel in the rough 250
User is just really nice 350
User is a glorious beacon of light 450
User is a name known to all 550
User is a splendid one to behold 650
User has much to be proud of 1,000
User has a brilliant future 1,500
User has a reputation beyond repute 2,000

There are protections so one person cannot ruin someone else's rep. You can only modify 10 user's reputations/day and you must issue rep to 20 different people before you can go back to the same person. If the reputation system does get out of hand, then it will be removed. We just figured it might be a useful tool for new members to judge the source of their advice.

EDIT: I looked it up BEEF: You have 5 points of rep altering power after all the math is done.

Re: We are experimenting with enabling user reputation.

I probably won't do much with my "power" if you want to call it that but I do like the idea of a gauge to know what the advice is. there are a lot of really awesome car guys here and they deserve recognition for that. their advice (especially on the hondas) is second to none.

thanks for the further breakdown.

Edit: I figured it out, lol I'm tired and need sleep.

Well, cross you fingers and hope for the best, at least we can always pull the plug if it goes wrong.

Re: We are experimenting with enabling user reputation.

Just my 2 cents, but-
It seems like points are somewhat difficult to get. 1 a year and 1 when you make it to 1k posts. I get the significance, but with only one point for an entire year I could give in the positive or negative, it seems like I'd hold onto it until someone did something really good. By then, I might have missed dozens of good posts by very knowledgeable users.

It seems equally difficult to get 100 positive reputation points because 100 different users that only have one point to give a year would take a long time to get.

I like the system, it seems like it could be a great way for new users. Up until now, new users had to rely on number of posts.... which may or may not be reflective of good advice. Just because I got perfect attendance in school doesn't mean I passed math class!

Re: We are experimenting with enabling user reputation.

"Points" are not used up when you give reputation. They merely represent how much effect you'll have on someone's reputation. They are a measure of your reputation-adjusting power.

Re: We are experimenting with enabling user reputation.

I like the concept.

Will additional green boxes be present as higher levels are reached?
i.e. would "jewel in the rough" have 4 green boxes showing?

When a person goes into the negative, do the boxes turn red instead of green?

Re: We are experimenting with enabling user reputation.

I just thought of something that I think hasn't been mentioned:

To see if you've received rep from anyone, click the UserCP tab at the top of the screen. There you'll see a list of recent reps received. In the list you can click to go to the post and see which post you were repped for.
