This is a common misconception that I also used to hold, until I looked at it from a different point of view.
Cars are more complicated, and it seems that the actual MPG figures have not changed...

It looks to me like you bought the wrong brass fittings for the filter. You should be able to get standard hose fittings designed for air tools for about $1-2 each. The whole catch can shouldn't...
