i got a new car

last monday my wifes old car, the 92 mitsubishi galant beast of a car, bit the dust. and this most recent saturday i picked up a 99 civic si for 6k.

i know its no gas saver, but its a blast to drive. i will get pics up on this thread eventually, but here is a start:

#1 complaint: 65mph=3500rpm, so all you fit owners should be grateful! other than that i love this car!

Congrats on the new car! I bet you could get some pretty awesome mileage out of it if you can stop from flooring it.

Congrats on the new wheelzzzz. I'll bet you'll be able to find an MPG sweet spot in your SI.

mitsubishi killed the galant. the transmission crapped out and wouldnt go into any drive gear or reverse(it was auto).

i am planning on ditching the wheels for something in the 15x5.5 range and getting oem springs so i can race it in h-stock. other than the rims and lowering springs, this car is factory.

also, i already found the mpg sweet spot, its cruising at 30mph in 5th gear @ ~1600rpm...

i really am amazed at how linear the torque deliver is, most of you have test driven a fit and know what i am talking about when i say it has a sub 2500rpm dead zone then it comes to life after that. a lot of hondas single cams have a similar but not as severe feeling.

the b16 (and b series for that matter) is totally different. feels almost like its an electric motor with at least 100ftlbs on tap from 1600rpm to 7600. i am exaggerating, but it still is a wonderful feeling.

anyway, with this thing's tranny i will be surprized if i ever break 40mpg.

yea.... i dont know how much a different 5th gear will help as much as a different final drive.

edit: i did some homework and the 5th gear of this car is crazy 0.875 with a final drive of 4.266. a 94-01 ls integra has a 5th gear of 0.714. this transmission already has the final drive on an ls integra. hmmm gears are turning....

man.... nevermind about having the ls fd... there is a lot of conflicting info out there....

anyway, after doing more research, it turns out that the b16 delsols nearly identical to the em1 si transmission bar the 5th gear behold:
. . . delsol . . civic si
1 . . 3.230 . . 3.230
2 . . 2.105 . . 2.105
3 . . 1.458 . . 1.458
4 . . 1.107 . . 1.107
5 . . 0.848 . . 0.875
r . . .3.000 . . 3.000
fd . .4.400 . . 4.400

unfortunately this difference is just due to there being one less tooth on the mainshaft gear from the 5th gear set. as the numbers show, wont make too much of a difference (3% drop in rpm), so even though it would be the easiest alternative that i would consider, i bet i would never notice the difference of 60rpm in cruising speed.

an ls 5th of .787 would give me a 10% drop in rpm for 5th and that would definitely be a noticable difference! 65 mph would instantly turn into ~3150rpm!! i bet it would make the difference between 4th and 5th seem HUGE!
